So just curious for #ableg vote watchers, what happens when the 48 hour deadline passes? We are nearly there and there's still millions of votes left to count. By my projections, two questions are still set to flip from Yes to No. What does the 48 hour deadline even mean if the count isn't done?

They twist them somehow: “Do you support the Government of Alberta taking increased control over fungal ratios, for the purposes of decreasing umami to more sustainable levels, prioritizing congealed dairy product and giving Alberta dairy producers priority over the Burger Baron mushroom burgers?”

We should do 10 questions every week, but make them fun ones. Favourite dinosaur, best Burger Baron location, etc.

People say this referendum was a waste of money, but a lot of my broke friends got some work out of it. And not so long ago I worked every election for the money too.

All I found behind the last door of my Alberta Referendum Advent Calendar was a dried out cat turd. Kind of a let down tbh

Slough comics archive: Panel from a longer piece on April 14, 2023 This is the first comic referencing her fixation on all things American.

Since today is "The Day", I thought I'd take a little look back at the Slough Comics archive on Dani's sovereignty nonsense. Pretty wild to think about how much power she had yet to consolidate when this comic was drawn. From December 12, 2022

Here is the actual sign for the American wine section at Andrew Hilton in Lethbridge. I know it’s real because I made it!

Dave Infante@dinfontay.com

ok yes alberta hasn't outright *banned* us wine but they're merchandising it under a big illustration of stewie from family guy in an american flag diaper, it's so fucking joever lmao

“I don’t think I like this game anymore” either. But we have to play it so that the seppies don’t think they have any kind of moral authority or priority over our collective future. Sadly, they won’t stop with a loss. And their victim narrative will feed the fire of grievance politics. On and on.

Seems like it would be more ethical to follow the Star Wars model and require that any AI communication is processed through a vocoder so it’s transparent (and hilarious) that you’re speaking with a ‘droid’. Could be what keeps everyone from being deluded into psychosis by the ‘digital god.’

Might be the most Danielle Smith thing ever.

Max Fawcett@maxfawcett.bsky.social

Very interesting piece/take by the esteemed Andrew Leach. TL;DR (but you should!) version: one of her proposed constitutional amendments would make it *harder* to build pipelines, not easier. It might, in fact, give a progressive BC government a veto over them. leach.substack.com/p/is-daniell...

In this week’s opinion column, Senator Paula Simons writes about anti-separation Albertans who genuinely believe the best form of protest is to boycott the referendum. While she understands their motives, she warns that staying home will backfire. #ableg #canpoli forwardweekly.ca/simons-cant-...

1. A fascinating article that has me thinking about visual literacy. @samgoertz.bsky.social touches on the clunkiness of the AI meme, though that isn’t the focus of the article.

Jared Wesley@jaredwesley.ca

Great analysis by @samgoertz.bsky.social, uncovering the deep story of Alberta politics through the milch-cow meme. cground.substack.com/p/the-meme-t...

2. The historical cartoons’ visual communication is precise and efficient. The gorky AI meme has convoluted labels (The cow, the rich men, and the buckets are all “Eastern Canada”?), …

3. …the milk metaphor is barely there: we can’t even see the udder, the buckets are full? Empty? The rich men are just holding cash. Is the cow eating hay or barfing it up? “That’s just what content is now.” Bleak days for us cartoonists. /end

I will be thinking about this thread all day. 🧵

Never thought I'd say this, but maybe AI should have been trained even MORE on my books, then it would have been incapable of killing anyone.

So sad and unfair. We weren’t done learning stuff from you.

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Harry Sanders, known to Calgarians for many years as "Harry the Historian", former Calgary Historian Laureate, who has passed away this past weekend. May his memory be a blessing. #yyc #yycheritage #heritageyyc

Hey, remember how I resolved to stop reading about Alberta separatism yesterday, because it was giving me panic attacks? This is different. DO read this.

Must-read speculative fiction from @premeemohamed.com in this week’s @forwardcanada.bsky.social Alberta newsletter. Illustrations by me. Devastatingly good. Go read it now. forwardweekly.ca/leave-or-rem...
