And the fascinating inverse, perhaps best captured by Jane Schoenbrun, movies where everyone is horny enough that it stops being a horror flick.

Babad🎃🎃kakis@ryanwu2438.bsky.social

I like this movie because it's part of a tradition of movies like BLACK NARCISSUS and ONIBABA where everyone's so horny it becomes a horror flick

Random critical take: it’s not that there’s nothing good about “Lightning Crashes”; it’s just that the good bit is the guitar riff they nick from “Take a Chance on Me.”

I recall hearing a news story in the '90s about a sect (Unitarian?) including the Muppet song "It's Not Easy Bein' Green" in its hymnal. I can't find any actual reference to this happening, and am probably misremembering. But does anyone here know what I'm referencing? Does anyone else recall this?

I mean, bitter estranged parents are pretty much the Republican base these days so this makes sense.

Unearthed footage of Vivek Ramaswamy mocking Amy Acton for being a survivor of childhood abuse: "She has no vision other than to complain about what someone else did to her"

The important swing voter is not someone who’s on the fence about whether they want fascism or health care, it’s someone who’s on the fence about whether they want fascism enough to go vote this time.

JUST IN: The police shooting that killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley as he sat in his mother’s lap in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Miss., in June “was justified,” Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office said on Monday. Her office will not charge the white officer who shot the child.

This is perfectly reasonable provided that the government is then allowed to dig a trench across the right of way leading to your driveway, disconnect all your utilities, and sit idly while your house burns.

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

The key difference between Elizabeth Holmes and Elon Musk is that Holmes cost many in the ruling class a lot of money and Musk is making many in the ruling class a lot of money.

Katie牛🏳️‍⚧️@kevincow.bsky.social

I was gonna say "how is it not illegal to promote your product with blatant lies like this" But then I remembered I just saw You Can See Everything, and like It very much is illegal So why is he not in jail like Holmes for his far more egregious and plentiful lies

Especially a good idea because Musk is singularly unsuited to a hostile questioning of this sort. He’d be profoundly easy to bait into a childish meltdown.

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

Elon Musk has hosted SNL and appeared on Rick and Morty more frequently that he has testified to Congress (zero fucking times). Fix that.

Again: everybody knows this isn't true. It's not a truth claim. It's an expression of genocidal animus. The obvious falsity of the assertion expresses the degree of hatred. Publicly acceding to such patent nonsense signals one's membership of the club, one's willingness to assent to mass murder.

Trump: "We have 5 states where your child goes off to school as Tim and comes back as Tammy 3 or 4 days later. It's true. And teachers make a decision. 'Goodbye Timmy I love you so much, I'll see you later.' And you say, 'Where's my son? My son is in the hospital.' Can you imagine?"

A fun game, for any given fandom, is trying to work out whether it has a sufficient number of insane knitters to do shit like this and, if so, what objects they’ll have fixated on. Doctor Who and “the scarf” are of course the easiest mode to play on.

From the knitter POV, you might want the cardigan Kate Bush wore in the video. You're in luck, because the Internet has everything. Link to the pattern & a yarn kit susancrawfordvintage.com/products/clo...

I don't think LLMs are conscious because I know (roughly) how they work and that work doesn't require consciousness, and there's no reason to think consciousness would be an emergent property of the software, any more than it would for, say, Microsoft Word, which no one thinks is conscious.

An excellent time to be a small indie creator who bet in the opposite direction.

We've probably got two solid years worth of complete dogshit entertainment coming thanks to spineless media execs overindexing on phony resurgence of reactionary cultural demand

Given that the average length of ownership for Warner Bros over the past four decades is nine years, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that they’ll do it by fucking up and then selling the company again.

I don’t reckon I’ll cover this Doctor Who cartoon episode by episode, but it looks like it’ll be pretty good at what it’s doing, and ought be a nice start to whatever the post-Gatwa Eruditorum is.
