Bluesky hivemind: Recommendations of a short story of speculative/science fiction that is specifically about discovering life on another planet? I'd like to avoid the fantastical and find more hard science stories. Thanks!

I mean, I get this. The problem for me is that of the major US sports, I've always like hockey and baseball the most. I do sometimes wonder how to exist in a world where trying separate the artist/athlete from the art/sport is challenging at best.

I’m thrilled to announce three new professorships in compressed air thruster ethics, compressed air thruster policy, and social impact of compressed air thrusters. we are also headhunting a Vice Provost of Thrust

I am always fascinated how MLB pitchers can throw 4 pitches totally outside the zone to walk a guy then turn to the next batter and only throw stuff in the zone. I mean, sure, some is gameplan but wow, talk about living a life of uncertainty.

Listen, I love "The Hunt for Red October" but when they splice in footage of a Grumman F9F Panther crashing on the deck of the aircraft carrier after showing a F-14 Tomcat on approach, it drives me bananas.

I get that people don't like "doomerist", but when it comes to the current GenAI that we are being sold, there is no upside for education. Education is supposed to be hard. You don't go to the gym and replace your weights with Styrofoam so you get your reps done faster. That's GenAI but for you mind

AI allows you to be "productive" by offloading the thinking to someone else (and it's not the LLM), part 1.

Harvard just dropped a study AI productivity in software engineering and it found the average increase in productivity from using Claude code is.....zero and for exactly the reasons you'd think fion.ac/jellyfish.pdf

I processed this Seestar S30 image of M33 (Whirlpool Galaxy) from the raw image file. I took it last night with my class as we observed Saturn in my reflector. This was only a 6 minute exposure so not too bad ... I think.

I've been sort of in science communication stasis for a few months now and feel no closer to understand what kind of scicomm is "worth doing" these days. I would appreciate any thoughts from the audience about it because I am stumped.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

I have no horse left in the baseball playoffs, so instead I will rank the remaining managers on likability (in my opinion). 1 Will Venable. 2 Dave Roberts. 3 Kevin Cash. 4 Steve Vogt. 5 Pat Murphy. 6 Craig Stammen. 7 Walt Weiss. 8 Aaron Boone. Booo. Booo.

Based on the reports of AI tech bros trying to schmooze the pope into endorsing AI, you'd think their next move would be install an antipope in Austin or something. This is real Western Schism action.

📻 To celebrate College Radio Day, tune in to more than a century of college radio history. In 1906, Harvard students formed what was described as the first college radio club. By the 1920s, students were building stations and broadcasting campus events. 📚 More: blog.archive.org/2026/10/02/1... 🧵

Say it with me folks: people shouldn't be forced to prove they aren't using AI. Instead, AI users should be forced to clearly label their slop as such. (Sorry, that might be hard to say in unison. I'm bad at slogans.)

John Scalzi@scalzi.com

The rush to accuse, without anything approaching due diligence, artists of using "AI," should be treated with contempt. An artist gets their work *ripped off* to train a plagiarism machine, which then shits out inferior versions of that work, so then you accuse the artist of using "AI"? Fuck you.

The Pope has this one figured out. The distinction between AI art (and by extension, any AI "creative or intellectual" product) is so clearly elucidated in this brief statement. Folks who say otherwise might want to question their understanding of humanity.
