Like the loch. I take pictures of bugs and flowers and try to pretend I’m not a computer person. They/them. Also on mastodon at https://toot.wales/@etc

The "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game is bullshit and always has been. These crazy bastards used data science to prove it: pudding.cool/2026/10/kevi...
Welp, there goes another one: pillowfort is shutting down in december. Just too expensive to run, between dev and moderation and low user numbers, regardless of how much they cut their overheads (and I think they were paid rather less than the cohost team were). www.pillowfort.social/posts/8413273/

The companies involved in it have had a falling out, with the marketing rights going to the company that can’t do the manufacturing. I’m guessing that means we won’t see it being actually used next year, and possibly not ever allsci.com/news/licensi...

Ho boy, do I have a story for you. The question of how ice breaks has been central to glaciology for well over a century.
Didn't know this was especially controversial. Unsupported vertical ice obviously has a structural limit, determined by the distribution of internal fractures, especially ~vertical ones. Vertically fractured ice becomes a column crushing problem. Details are what's not known, and consequences?
This one is going on the list. I can’t quite place what the art style reminds me of, but i really like even the tiny amount that’s on the steam page.
One game is Funeral for the Sun, which has the genius premise of Roottrees-esque genealogy deduction but with a Latin American, magical realist setting. But it's more than just a single clever idea; I think the time I spent with it only scratched the surface. store.steampowered.com/app/4088360/...

New damage-resistant knitting pattern discovered using maths! I’m slightly disappointed there’s no nice image of the actual knit, other than a tiny photo of how defect propagation is limited. Diagram (b) and photo (e) show the robust knit. It doesn’t look simple, but I Am Not A Knitter.
New knitting stitch just dropped, and I got to draw it!! www.scientificamerican.com/article/math...

It’s wild to imagine a United States where the death of 8 children resulted in actual policy change. More on brand to see that the response to a bunch of vehicle accidents was to blame the time zone.
I remind everyone, again, that they tried year-round daylight saving time and stopped it because it got bunch of kids got killed in just a few weeks

Well, these things are fascinating. You can spend years eating them with no problems, and all the while they’re whispering to your white blood cells that the red blood cells are inferior and should be destroyed, and then one day it just happens.
So far no major illness has been reported after mushrooms tentatively identified as Paxillus involutus were sold. It’s not clear if anyone who ate them is out of the woods, Interior Health medical health officer Dr. Andy Delli Pizzi said. thetyee.ca/News/2026/09...

This is cool, but I really wanted to know where the actual bouy was. It seems to be at an experimental wave power site called SEM-REV, near nantes. juliusvonbismarck.com/bank/index.p... fondation-open-c.org/nos-sites-en... cartes.gouv.fr/explorer-les...
The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.
