If this indeed is the end of the Assad regime, it is difficult not to reflect on all the death, suffering and destruction that have taken place since the peaceful protests began in connection with the so-called Arab Spring. Much could have been very different.

"Lula now goes down in history as one of the few democratic left-wing leaders in the world to have been elected four times. For Jair Bolsonaro, this is bad news.

The plan had been for his son to grant him a pardon. Now, the father must continue serving his 27-year prison sentence—under house arrest—for attempting to topple Lula after losing to him four years ago."

"The same pattern played out in several other major cities run by conservative mayors. The strategy was to let those with access to cars decide the election. That is not how it turned out. Upon learning of the attempt to prevent ordinary citizens from voting, a Supreme Court justice

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

The forecasts proved wrong, and the so-called Orange Wave was broken. Since Donald Trump took office for a second time, right-wing candidates have won all seven elections in Latin America. In Brazil, however, now a victory for left-leaning democracy and a continued protection of the Amazon. Hope.

Bolsonaro is predicted to win the second round and then pardon his ex-president father from his 27-year prison sentence.
