A decade ago, I found an empty, lit carnival in Vienna, strangely suspended in time. That same quiet strangeness lives in the book I'm writing: an ancient crow, an untrained mage & a soul bond that could save her town or expose her to whatever is ravaging it. 💙📚 Art & lore evcaldwell.com/TheCircle

Currently enjoying the dark mood of Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab. It feels perfect for October. What are you reading? #BookSky

What frightens you more in a fantasy story? A monster that wants to kill you... Or a seemingly kind person who knows everything about you, can predict your decisions, and insists they're only trying to help? I'd choose the second. At least with the monster, you know where you stand. #booksky

Cut a scene today. It was a sweet early moment with good character building, but it slowed the opening and felt out of place in an otherwise heavy chapter. Do you stash your cut scenes for later, or let them go? #BookSky #AmWriting

Do you flip through and count the remaining pages and hours when you are enjoying a book or when you are not enjoying it? #BookSky

Reading "Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil," I'm immediately reminded how much I love the intricate, architectural tension in V.E. Schwab's writing. What's your favorite of hers? #BookSky #AmReading

There's something about writing by firelight. The look of every flame is the same, but each has its own rhythm, forging a new path through the air. Stories are like that. We recognize their shape but delight in their unique movements. #BookSky #Photography

Growth and Decay I saw a sapling growing from the stumps of a decaying tree while walking my huskies and imagined the ghost of the dead tree watching over its successor. 1/2 #art #painting #tree

Focusing on finishing a chapter today so I can be fully present during a much-needed trip this weekend. Photos from the top of a waterfall to follow. What are you working on before the weekend? #AmWriting #BookSky

Still thinking about that crow question from last week? The short answer: her town is next. The long answer, how he chooses her and what it costs her, is what I'm writing now. Pieces of it go to The Circle before anywhere else. evcaldwell.com/TheCircle #Booksky

What would it take to convince an ancient crow to offer his last soul bond to someone with barely any magic training? #Booksky

The Fifth Season: The Broken Earth Trilogy @nkjemisin.bsky.social gives one of the most accurate representations of grief from death I’ve ever read. As someone with a young son, this was especially difficult to process but important to recognize. #AmReading #BookSky #Fantasy
