(3/4) Although I did a lot of work on this in grad school , the unresolved question led us to write an NSF grant in ~2017 when I was a prof . In new analysis, in a welcome role reversal, my former advisor Mike Sorenson did the heavy lifting, including some very fussy analyses only he could do!

This is (very) long but worth a read for those curious about the NSF. This is quite impressive journalism in my opinion. I don’t agree with the author on everything, or maybe just the “details matter”, but still have a read! newscience.org/nsf/

I particularly think the details on what POs at NSF do relative to NIH and relative to Golden Tickets and issues with groupthink are useful to have out there. Also reminders about the state of the rotator program at NSF and the relationship to these same issues!

If you are part of an academic society or a professor of any kind, public statements that you do not condone Drexel cutting off the academy of natural sciences from the public of Philadelphia is very important right now. We need your voices. Urgently.

One of the most depressing things you’ll read today—on how RFK Jr & Jay Bhattacharya dismantled the CDC & pushed the agency to spend time investigating kooky anti-vaxx anti-science theories It’s tragic: they took the world’s premier public health agency & zombified it; the impacts have been awful

In my new Expert Voices column @science.org, I argue that the Trump admin's science strategy (as written in Kratsios' Science: A Golden Age)--which gives more authority & funding to the private sector to direct the research enterprise--will harm science, and further erode its public accountability.

Yes. The conventional wisdom is that the lab leak has been suppressed when in fact it has been given far more credibility than it deserves. Scientists should explore every possibility but the lay public should know that spillover has a ton of evidence and a leak has none.

Who needs Moore's law when you've got solar growth rates?

Nicolas Fulghum@nicolasfulghum.bsky.social

Solar's sharp rise continues. As of April 2026, global solar capacity now exceeds 3 terawatt. 1 gigawatt → 1 terawatt: 20+ years 1 terawatt → 2 terawatt: 33 months 2 terawatt → 3 terawatt: 19 months

New paper from the lab! In which we, in partnership with Sylvan Heights Bird Park, describe patterns of genetic diversity, pathogen susceptibility, and inbreeding in one of the rarest birds in the world, the white-winged wood duck (not a muscovy duck). A short thread, and link below. (1/4)

Birds from India were imported to the UK and then the US where they have been bred in captivity for decades. These birds, however, are highly susceptible to avian tuberculosis, a major challenge for husbandry that has caused US-based populations to collapse. (3/4)

Humble as always @birdfiddler.bsky.social , who could be said to be the brains behind this operation. It was Alice after all who pointed out to me this linkage between frugivory and sexual selection and the papers from Snow and others :)

Alice Boyle@birdfiddler.bsky.social

There is a LOT in this ms. Broad taxononomic scope, new genomes, functional genomics, physiology, & more. I have never been prouder to play such a minor role in a paper. On that note: the long author list reflects the huge diversity of skills & perspectives req to tackle this question! Yay collabs!

I can’t emphasize enough the contributions of the team. Some probably view this number of first authors as absurd, but each of them contributed a massive amount of time and effort (and data!) just an amazing team to work with. I’m so happy to have this out in the world!

Our point in this research is not that bird feeding causes zoonotic spillover, but that we can actually *predict* when spillover is likely to occur, so that we can adjust our behavior (e.g., bird feeding) when the risk supports us making a change.
