We wanted to understand how working-class Americans in the midwest will vote next Tuesday. So we talked to three Free Press staffers at a Cheesecake Factory in Glendale.

Perhaps the UAE's candidate for UN Secretary-General Lana Nusseibeh "could begin by explaining why her own government has been repeatedly implicated in helping fuel the genocidal catastrophe in Sudan." My latest piece for Zeteo on a potentially awful decision coming from the UN Security Council:

zeteo.comThe UAE Helped Fuel the Sudan Genocide. Now One of Its Diplomats Wants To Lead the United NationsMehdi makes the scathing case against the UN Security Council recommending Emirati official Lana Nusseibeh as the next Secretary-General of the organization.

One of the many products we have available to us today where your initial instinct that "this is fake and a scam and I refuse to take it seriously" is the correct thought.

We live in superlatively stupid times, but the idea that a gambling market is supposed to be predictive of anything is among the lowest lows we've sunk to. These markets skew right because they are right wing and the bettors want right wing outcomes. People always bet on the Patriots in Boston too.

A reminder, because it is almost that time of year: More children are killed by cars on Halloween than any other day of the year, by far. www.vox.com/future-perfe... If you're a parent, I hope you'll do what you can to keep kids safe. If you're driving on Saturday, PLEASE exercise extra caution.

All of this. Back in 2015, I started telling people that if donald won, it would be very difficult if impossible to get him out of office. Of course, I was the "hysterical" one. Then 1/6 happened and I sure didn't hear anything from all those people. So now he's trying to fuck us again.

It's tempting to see Trump's Alaskan adventure as more electoral skullduggery. But it's a dangerous escalation of his attacks on democracy. He's not trying to suppress votes, he's trying to steal votes that have already been cast. My latest in @thenation.com www.thenation.com/article/poli...

Beyond disgusted by even more rape allegations against the President of the United States. "In total, more than 25 different women...have independently accused Donald Trump of rape, sexual assault, or other sexual misconduct." Report w/ new details: democrats-judiciary.house.gov/sites/evo-su...

Shocking, but not surprising.

NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

We published this story late Friday afternoon amid an avalanche of news so I’m reposting it now because Kohen Wiley’s life mattered more than a box of diapers.

So @lilianasegura.bsky.social and I just co-wrote a piece about the bodycam footage in the Kohan Wiley case. theintercept.com/2026/10/23/k...

Aw, geez. #RIP Ensign Checkov.

George Takei@georgetakei.bsky.social

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Wow.

The Ramaswamy ad has pushed the largest newspaper in Ohio, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, to reverse its position on endorsements. "A candidate who uses childhood sexual abuse as a weapon against the person who endured it has crossed a line that Ohioans should defend, whatever their party."

Writing, reviewing, and publishing peer reviewed research should almost never incorporate generative AI. Your work is not your work if you use it. @ametsoc.org bans the use of AI in peer review and should continue to do so. I'll stop reviewing for @springernature.com because of this.

Y'all. Definitely won't be trusting @springernature.com in the future if human expert peer reviewers won't be tasked with actually reading and assessing a manuscript's content. Instead, they'll just be letting AI paraphrase and summarize for them! Wheeee! jfc

I'm going to point out that Jesse Singal has a very public track record of being intensely, specifically cruel to individuals, specifically the trans people who criticize him, whom he has hounded to their workplaces, harassed online, and (at times) successfully gotten fired from their jobs

Toby Buckle@polphilpod.bsky.social

every now & then someone on the anti-trans side will get cold feet about how openly ugly it's all getting—they want to keep the image of a nice, sensible centrist but it's never enough for them to get off the train

I think one of the best aspects of this story is just how *average* the cop is. This is pretty much what most cops are like. They believe they are doing a good job.
