Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.

Ireland has some responsibility on this. One of the greatest contributions we could be making to collective EU & global democracy & security (far more useful then disastrous attempts to remove the triple lock) would be having the courage to step up to our role as digital regulator in a serious way.

Adam Schwarz@adamjschwarz.bsky.social

Lula: "We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. A crime in the digital world must be treated the same as a crime in the real world. We cannot have monstrous companies earning millions... not paying taxes... wanting to steer elections."

Reminds me of how important Repeal Shield was during the 2018 referendum. The amount of mental space that was freed up by just ignoring the anti-choicers instead of trying to argue with them. It let us focus on putting forward our own points

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

if Peadar Tóibín is suggesting that children need to get used to being touched without their consent, he should be asked why

The Journal@thejournal.ie

Adverts run by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre looking at consensual hugs between children and their grandparents has been suspended after criticism. Aontú's Peader Tóibín called the ad "bonkers", as he urged a "need to build resilience" among children. www.thejournal.ie/grandparents...

Looking forward to the next general election when opposition parties rally around the hugely popular livewire issues of housing and neutrality but their fragile coalition shatters, catapulting FFFG and a few rural independent Hitler-particle emitters back into government.

15 years since his passing, and five years since this mysterious notice appeared in the In Memoriam section of the Irish Times. I haven't seen today's paper yet but I wonder were his friends here in Ireland sufficiently on the ball to get the notice in on time.

it has been truly dispiriting to see people suggesting O'Donovan isn't fit for office due to his disability this week. some were gleeful he was hospitalised right after getting publicly upset about his own party colleagues briefing against him in the press because he's epileptic

The communications minister Patrick O’Donovan remains in intensive care in hospital after taking ill earlier this week. The minister was removed by ambulance from a gathering of EU telecoms ministers on Tuesday and has been receiving treatment at UHL since then. @virginmedianews.bsky.social

It's criminal that our English curriculum doesn't discuss how many of our nation's greatest poets and writers were alcoholic perverts that had WWE-style rivalries with one another.

Way back when, I canvassed Twitter for similar tales. My favourite, and one I still think about eight years later, was this.

Lookit. Deep down every Irish person wants to spin some yank a yarn that gets cited as fact in some factual text. We told an Irish American girl that when the Muppets was released in Ireland, Kermit the Frog was called Dermot the Frog because Cromwell’s son was a Kermit.

We once convinced an American friend to go into Paddy Power to pay the electricity bill in cash.

Thought this was about the Spanish dictator at first and thought it was an odd hill to die on.

Franco is not a creep. Those women slept with him because they wanted to, but the social climate made them question their memories and take everything out of context. Everyone who knew Franco best made it clear: "James is not a predator."

You can tell this is actually a fake cr*pto scam because no article about Glen Hansard in an Irish newspaper would ever feature the words "Sorry, he did what?" because they all knew damn well but never printed it.

RIP Jeffrey Archer, not a day goes by when I don't think about the judge in his 1987 libel case (which Archer "won" by doing a bunch of perjury) summing up for the jury by going "would a guilty man have such a hot wife". one of the most insane legal moments of all time

"How do you exempt locals from immigration checks without racial profiling?" “A human-rights based approach is adopted in relation to every individual stopped". OK then.

Very efficient to have them doing what DPER already does. My guess is this will be a half arsed DOGE for the Healy Rae and Michael Collins axis who'll get to haul a few woke NGOs into the PAC and cancel a bikeshed in Ennis.

The Journal@thejournal.ie

Minister announces new public spending efficiency taskforce to "extensively scrutinise day-to-day public spending". It will identify areas across public spending where there is scope for more efficiency, and recommend actions that can deliver better services and greater value for money.

I suspect you'd get different results in an Irish paper, and if someone doesn't run this poll here in the next 24 hours I'd be very surprised.

Five hour DJ set at my friend's 50th birthday party this weekend just gone ended in the most spectacular way imaginable - a cop shining a torch in my face and telling me to shut down the tunes. We all felt like bold teenagers again, is there a greater gift than that for the day that was in it?

the Irish far right are so unpopular they have to trick people into going to their "protests" also, journalists need to stop using Tom McDonnell's remarks about "breeding" as their standard reference point. it makes him sound less extreme than he actually is www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-41...

Mise Éire have announced the headliner for their "Risen People" event, and it's... Neil Oliver of GB News. apparently the Irish people need to learn how to be nationalists from a British unionist. you couldn't mock the Irish far right any harder than they mock themselves

The reason Dublin doesn’t follow suit is because it largely considers the people living in its city centre to be more or less subhuman inconveniences to retail and car traffic.

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.” Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability and quality of life. Common sense. Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.

I have an idea percolating around a study on the social history of hotels in Ireland. Rebellions planned in them, so many hotels in old mansion houses, current use as emergency accommodation. I'd like to do a deep dive; anyone know if something like this already exists? #spéirgorm
