Once again recommending these bug-noculars to anyone who likes looking at lichen, bugs, & small things...

Moths in a human suit (they/them)@lycomorpha.bsky.social

Ages ago @vivschwarz.bsky.social told me about these bug-noculars, & I'm eternally friggin grateful (& also to Kitty for gifting me them!) If you like looking at bugs/lichen/things in rock-pools but have shitty eyesight? They're amazing.

Doassansiopsis hydrophila on Potamogeton on Monday - this is one of a group of fungi infecting aquatic plants, with large spore balls (~0.2mm) which presumably float to their next host. #FungiFriends #WildPlantDisease

The 5th iteration of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG V) classification has been published. It's #OpenAccess, so check it out here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

This little copse of skinny matchstick-like structures is Melanospora lagenaria, a mycoparasite occurring here on an old specimen of Birch Polypore, Fomitopsis betulina.

I've recently discovered Martyn Kelly's Microscope and Monsters blog which I'm thoroughly enjoying. The post below illustrates how many ecologists are often fungi blind, failing to recognise, or mention, the importance of fungi in ecosystems. microscopesandmonsters.wordpress.com/2017/10/29/a...

microscopesandmonsters.wordpress.comA very dilute compost heap …It is hard to believe that this idyllic view is within a kilometre of the centre of Newcastle.   We are standing in Jesmond Dene, a steep-sided valley that is now, thanks to the largesse of Lord Ar…

Without initial fungal attack and the decomposition of some of the toughest chemical components in leaves (including lignin and celulose), many shreaders and detritus feeders would find leaves in rivers too tough to handle.

A huge loss. DrM fought so hard to help people to overcome plant blindness. So many botany students learnt from him. Few tutors teach by song but DrM certainly did!

🌿🌾🌳🌍🍞🎼We are sad that Jonathan Mitchley ('DrM') passed away this week. BUC and especially the Student Botany Festival, would not exist without him. He made a big impact on the UK & Irish student botany community. Competition & festival will continue in 2027. www.reading.ac.uk/news/2026/Un...

Collemopsidium pelvetiae: extraordinary 3-part #lichen involving #fungus, #cyanobacterium and #seaweed! Vanishingly few records in Britain. I suspect it's not quite so rare: I found it on 3 of 6 beaches searched on summer holiday in Scotland. Grows only on channelled wrack (Pelvetia canaliculata).

I like the look of those, stickers @bernoid.bsky.social Have you thought about making a set available?

Autumn is just around the corner and now that it's finally rained, so are the mushrooms. I've added 'So Mushroom' card sets & prints to my shop. CARPE FUNGUM! 🍄 www.etsy.com/uk/shop/Bern...

I love to see people's plant pathogen finds. It shows me what to look out for. Thanks for sharing this one @bitheolaidhe.bsky.social

Well done @sim-elliott.bsky.social for making opportunities available for people to find out about lichens and the importance of open parkland.

1/2 Now I shall be doing regular beginners lichen walks at Petworth Park I am going to big up Sussex lichens! I think because of the increasing interest in Britain's Temperate Rain Forests (and they are fab) people forget (never knew) that the Southern parklands Lecanactidetum premneae community

A useful conversation on location precision in biological records. What is fit for purpose in one biological group doesn't always work for other groups.

Catching up with iRecord verification. A lovely set of photos of Odiellus spinosus with correct ID recorded via iNat. I was about to verify & complement the recorder on such good pics when I looked at the grid ref - TG, no numbers. What is the point! Shouldn't be able to submit rec without data.😠

I'm not an earthworm fan but this video is really interesting. It reminds me of Grime's ecological triangle for plant growth strategies: ruderals, competitors and stress-tolerators.

A beautiful dialogue with the environment. This textile installation intricately mimics the growth patterns of moss and lichen, seamlessly blending fiber craft with the living bark of the tree. In memory of the brilliant artist Hannah Streefkerk (1973–2018). Artwork title: "Symbiosis"

Another very exciting plant pathogen this afternoon! Hyalopsora adianti-capilli-veneris on Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris). Nice enough surprise to stumble across a gorgeous Palustriella tufa flush with lots of the fern. Been checking Adiantum in Britain for this rust for a long time!
