Great news: USA has broken the Preston Curve, an econ theorem that says wealth to life expectancy is a log curve. Poor to middle income = huge gains in life expectancy, middle to rich = modest gains, rich to richer = no gains. Bad news: we broke it in the wrong direction. www.nber.org/papers/w35470

I'm sorry some of you dislike Bluesky. My experience here is pretty good. Maybe it's because I don't think of myself as a political operative posting to win elections or transform politics. I like writing, reading, and interacting, and found here better than elsewhere. To each their own, I guess.

Something non-Americans don't about appreciate about us is that our built environment is just a place for to put cars and chain stores. You'd be staring at your phone if you were stuck in an American city too. They're mostly characterless horrible places to be alive.

I am consistently baffled by Pydantic. It feels as though it exists solely to generate the maximal number of minimally interpretable runtime errors.

It's hard to feel like ideas matter right now. Hot takes pitching a substack to a barely literate audience with a 30 second attention span. Dismal times.

Why do so many OpenSource projects rely on Discord? It is tremendously annoying to use in all possible ways. I am not a gamer, I do not want games, I do not want things gamified. The login experience is tremendously bizarre. There has to be a better platform.

In America, we may need one of those "It has been ___ days since" signs for presidential assassination attempts. We can just put it up at border crossing and airport so people know what they're in for when they come in.

Reading the Alex Karp diatribe I cannot help but wonder: why are billionaires always complaining about "The Elite"? He has unimaginable wealth and power far beyond the imagination of an adjunct professor or journalist making $75k/yr. He is The Elite. There is no one more 'elite'.

Every morning at 6AM the dudes next door try to get their pickup started for about 20 minutes straight and I just want to go over and say "look, just take it to a shop, I'll pay." And then they finally get it going and I fall back asleep and forget it ever happened. Until the next morning.

Regret to inform everyone that Peter Magyar beat the world’s smartest illiberal populist in large measure by working incredibly hard for 2 straight years, meaning the rest of us are just going to have to get off our asses and do shit rather than just complaining.

I think we need an intervention. Whatever that's called in geopolitical terms. Ah, turns out it's called "an invasion". Yeah. We need that I guess.

I am now 6 months into an absolute struggle to get a small honorarium for a talk that I gave at a UK University. At this point it's just the principle that if I'm going to wake up and be on-camera at 2AM, I should get paid for it.

In a healthy democracy the government would have collapsed by now and instead we've got at best just over 7 months to know if there will be electoral consequences and until january for them to start to take effect

I feel pretty good paying my city and state taxes. I feel a hell of a lot less good paying my federal taxes. I do know that some of it filters down to institutions and work that I truly value but a hell of a lot of it goes to murder and destruction.

Chuck Norris has died. He is survived by 20 years of memes about how Chuck Norris was cool, and 80 years of public record about how he wasn't.

I think yes. This will probably be bad for me (and most Americans) but good for the planet.

1/ Disruptions mean countries will rush to exit US-led oil order Worst case scenario for oil companies (best for rest of us) is that people permanently shift...what they call “demand destruction“ i.e short term pain but Long: Iran war will accelerate ongoing STRUCTURAL shift to solar+EVs+batteries

One long-term upside of this astonishingly stupid war: it may speed more of the globe towards renewable energy and more Americans to public transit. Could degrade the US. militarily-enforced oil/dollar regime which will be quite bad for us in the US but good for everyone else.
