Okkervil River (again) Decades from now, your kid will borrow "They play music of your choice when they cut you open," singing it over acoustics with friends, and while you're long past your circle pit days you'll feel the blood rush. This world is worth fighting for. bsky.app/profile/butt...

Sad dad here: They play music of your choice when they cut you open and Okkervil River stabilized my heart rate instantly and that’s how the first sound my daughter heard on earth was The War Criminal Rises and Speaks, an augur of dubious but ultimately illegible auspiciousness

"Young mayor gets caught using police gym for pickup basketball" is the plot of a kids movie where the mayor is the hero

New: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a group of his friends have been secretly using the NYPD Police Academy’s gymnasium in Queens to play pickup basketball — scrambling some operations at the facility. w/ @grahamrayman.bsky.social & Joe Anuta www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

it is perfectly fine and good to run on putting money back in people's pockets and then do that by banning and breaking industries which are entirely scams (crypto, phone gambling, please please please pretty please donate $1 right now)

It's good for people who work at tech companies to realize that benign premises are often masks for contracts they're uncomfortable with, and also Boston Dynamics *origin* is as a defense contractor building robot mules for the military.

To riff on this: while reporting on DARPA in February 2020 (a Normal Time) I saw the demonstration of robotic navigation in underground environments, hinged on and framed as rescue tools. Entirely plausible! compelling tech. Fully military www.c4isrnet.com/unmanned/rob... bsky.app/profile/fain...

It genuinely does suck and is *bad* that it feels like there’s almost nowhere to go for people who 1. Want to work on robotics (like drones) and 2. Don’t want to build weapons.

it really couldn't be anything except the Sad Dad Bands thread for me

Kelsey Atherton@atherton.bsky.social

"Flood" is the correct TMBG album for this and already done; I could make a case for Apollo 18, Factory Showroom, or Mink Car. "The Monitor" by Titus Andronicus seems a glaring omission, worth remedying. But the most honest fit is getting 33 1/3 to somehow publish my Sad Dad Bands thread

there's an opportunity, especially in an age where AI generated slop is the aesthetic of reactionaries globally, for other institutions to put forth high quality public domain photography to fill the void, but in lieu of that there's just so so so much stuff made by DoD out there.

Easy to reconcile "most politics is local" and "wow everyone in my english-speaking timeline is celebrating the defeat of Bolsonaro Jr in Brazil." We live in an interconnected system with interconnected problems. The fate of the literal Amazon and the machinations of Silicon Valley matter globally.

The power of capital is transnational and solidarity in opposition to it must be as well. Democracy abroad is better for democracy at home. The authoritarians and autocrats benefit from the world being a closed transactional buyer's club; it is in all our interests to work against this together.

for context, in 2020 silicon valley companies had about 23 pages of risk factors on average, per one analysis of 150 public firms. i guess it's possible the totals are higher for startups just making their debut, but to me 94 pages is just bananas www.thecorporatecounsel.net/blog/2021/08...

I am devastated to learn that Eric Bauza has died. I just spoke with him a couple months ago and I cannot express how joyous it was to have *the Looney Tunes* speaking to *me* and I also cannot express how much it was clear doing the voices brought Bauza joy. www.vulture.com/article/eric...

The plane that expelled these people flew within 200 miles of Equatorial Guinea at about 10pm Arizona time last night. At that point, there were only crew, ICE agents and GEO Group guards onboard, nothing stopping them from going to EG to get Ahmed Soliman. ICE continues to defy court order.
