HOLY SHIT. In a sworn statement yesterday, an ICE agent told a federal judge that an ICE flight to Equatorial Guinea had been cancelled and so couldn't be used to bring Ahmed Soliman back to the United States. The plane just landed in Equatorial Guinea. prospect.org/2026/10/23/t...

Just as a private equity firm buys out a corporation and strips it for parts, a consultant class is raiding the Democratic Party and getting “generationally wealthy” along the way New from me and @adambonica.bsky.social newrepublic.com/article/2163...
For @boltsmag.org, I looked at the ongoing dissolution of the ICE detention contract in NY's Orange County; these have gotten less attention that the also-banned 287(g) agreements, but are very significant, and the local sheriff's posture is making a once-sleepy race more heated

The Panopticon was a thought experiment but the technology is now genuinely there to make it a reality and we have to grapple with what that means for us as a society. /yes, I am aware that others countries had this debate and went with total surveillance decades ago.

Interesting point but also “undocumented children” born in the U.S. is an oxymoron. Anyone born in U.S. jurisdiction is a U.S. citizen or national (or, in very few cases, a permanent resident)
Adam Hamilton to Roger Marshall: "I'm just curious -- with all those undocumented children that you delivered, did you also call ICE and ask them to be taken away? You had compassion in delivering these children, but then you support quotas?"
In @newrepublic.com I argue that the Trump era has dynamited the premise that large corporate interests can or will act in concert to protect their commercial interests. Trump rolled them and liberals can, too, on the road to popular economic and social policy

In what's become a recurring segment, I lay out in @newrepublic.com a lesson we can take from MAGA. The popular notion that the money men who call the shots would step in and stop Trump's economic arson was wrong. This should break Dems' illusion that big business can derail their economic designs

There's a common perception among Dem leadership and consultants that even popular economic and social policy must accommodate the moneyed interests that have the collective capital firepower to torpedo anything that overtly threatens them. Trump has blown that up; Wall St couldn't even stop tariffs
While the administration is bleating about the nonexistent issue of mass noncitizen voting in federal elections, it is actually promulgating the inverse: keeping potentially hundred of thousands of would-be citizens from being able to vote in the midterms
While we don’t have a smoking gun yet, there is reason to believe that earlier this year the Trump admin ordered USCIS to arbitrarily cap the number of immigrants who can become citizens each month. Backlogs in the naturalization process are now skyrocketing.
Incidentally, North Lake was formerly a noncitizen-only federal prison (a specific subset of BOP prisons that are all privately run) where I found sudden transfers during the height of COVID led to mass spread. I’m unsurprised things are still terrible there as an immigration detention center
Nearly five months ago, I got a tip that opened the door to a group of women locked up at North Lake, the largest immigration detention center in the Midwest -- and @melissa-sanchez.bsky.social + I quickly saw a pattern in how they got there.

Billions of dollars’ worth of contracts predicting oil would fall and the S&P 500 would rise were placed about 15 minutes before Trump announced a U-turn on Iran in a post on Truth Social. CFTC staff began to investigate...then were told to lay off. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

Reup: 4 HSI Agents--like the people who raided Ilhan Omar today--have lied to judges at least 36 times to target Dems and other Trump opponents, one to excuse following a Todd Blanche order, another to do Harmeet Dhillon's dirty work. emptywheel.net/2026/10/12/h...
As I wrote this summer, New York has recently become one of the states with a state-level cause of action for violations of the Constitution. If and when Oscar Belga is released (or, potentially, while detained), he could under this law individually sue the ICE agents involved in his shooting
I’d seen mention of the raid, but Reuters reports it was related to the immigration paperwork her father filed decades ago. This is another salvo in the admin’s effort to indicate to every immigrant, whether they’ve since naturalized, whether they’ve become a member of Congress, that we aren’t safe
This is going to be a real test of both whether the mayor is willing to take concrete action that is squarely within the city’s power to investigate and, if reasonable, prosecute a federal agent; and whether the NYPD is willing to go through with that. I wrote about the process here
Even if your assumption is Musk is a net positive for the U.S. (a very shaky premise) he obviously did not receive an H-1B as *today's* Musk, and as has been extensively covered, would have been detained and deported for his unlawful presence and work under policies he and Vance both support now
JD Vance on H-1B recipients: "It's one thing if you were to bring in a person like Elon Musk. I think 99% of American citizens look at somebody like Elon Musk and say, 'if that person wants to come in and build something great in the US, we support that.' But if you're bringing in an accountant... "
I also feel like if I were an ME voter I'd be annoyed by the laziness of using a base AI template for your flyer, which is so immediately recognizable and makes it look like any ad for a local sandwich shop or a shitty martial arts studio
And yet, there is a 0% chance that Collins will go near him or allow herself to be photographed with him.
This isn't a new system btw, they're just doing updates where they're apparently enrolling a huge wave of new people. Here's a bit more context on the program
Maybe I’m talking the bait but I’ll grant that this is an in theory useful approach in an environment where a) extreme polarization and a degraded information economy didn’t make people entirely resistant to countervailing facts and able to trivially source whatever facts they shared
The best cure for ideological bias is find someone on the other side and go to lunch with them. Sometimes we disagree about facts. Sometimes we disagree about values. Figuring out which is which is fun part. https://newsletter.platypuseconomics.com/p/my-libertarian-friends-were-right
As I found out when I looked into criminal contempt for defiance of the courts, actually pursuing this route is extremely difficult not least because this is a federal crime, meaning a) the judge would typically have to get a DOJ prosecutor to pursue it and b) Trump could just pardon it
Still, that doesn’t mean judges shouldn’t try at all, particularly if they’re interested in retaining some authority as an independent branch of government. They could in theory appoint an outside prosecutor if DOJ won’t take it, and civil contempt could be used to strip officials of immunities
One thing I’ve found striking in recent years is the extent to which I hear Gen Z / Alpha use this algo-speak in real life
It’s a very minor point amongst the far greater injustices of the situation, but the Cornell case has also just reminded me how much all of society seems to have just accepted the fact that big tech won’t allow people to use the word “rape”. (Or at least people *believe* so — nobody knows!)
