Of the 50,000 heat deaths in Europe in the summer of 2026, 32,000 were killed by fossil fuels.
Meanwhile, $65 billion in windfall profits for five biggest oil and gas companies in second quarter of 2026.

Mexicans were lucky, hurricane Polo hit a sparsely populated region - but already today the impact of climate change is larger than that of El Niño on hurricanes like this. El Niño will pass, climate change will get worse @wwattribution.bsky.socialwww.worldweatherattribution.org/effect-of-cl...
After a year of many experiencing the brutal reality of climate change, not least in Nepal, COP31 will happen & could provide an opportunity to bring the urgent need to massively accelerate global action on climate change back in focus- maybe - we'll talk about it: www.imperial.ac.uk/events/21370...
Heute wird der westfälische Friedenspreis an die NATO verliehen. Die Frauen in der Jury hatten viele konstruktive Vorschläge für alternative Preisträger gemacht, konnten sich aus unerfindlichen Gründen aber nicht durchsetzen.
What are known causal factors behind rock-ice avalanche near Nepal–Tibet border? @wwattribution.bsky.social Vulnerable slope, potentially weakened by 2015 earthquake, definitely destabilised by climate change through glacier retreat & permafrost thaw. www.worldweatherattribution.org/rapid-warmin...
🧵CO₂ removal (CDR) is back in the news, but just because the UNEP report says we need CDR, it doesn't mean we'll have CDR. Many challenges will take decades of research and negotiation to solve. Here are some examples:
Technological: We currently don't have any durable CDR method that scales.
I think the way to read the UNEP report isn't "we'll miss the 1.5°C target so we need CDR to reach it", but "we'll miss the 1.5°C target, and we need to decarbonize ASAP because wherever we end up is where we will stay for a long time."

Europe’s seas are experiencing heat that would have been virtually impossible in a pre-industrial climate. In the Mediterranean, summer SSTs have intensified by 3°C, far exceeding global warming, destroying marine life & dramatically altering our seas.

Just in case it wasn't already clear...
Burning fossil fuels -> more greenhouse gas pollution -> more warming -> super-charged heatwaves + enhanced drought + super-flammable conditions -> all of this.
And it's only going to get worse from now on. We really do need to stop.
This is fine...
"Britain on fire"
"Heatwave devastation"
"Inferno"
"Houses burn and train derails on hottest day"
"Rampant wildfires engulf streets of family homes"
"Record 2.5m trips to A&E"
"Temps hit 38.1C as fifth heatwave peaks"
"Britain in meltdown"
I know he has a lot on, but in the midst of a ferocious drought, fires, heat events and severe threats to food production, it would be quite edifying to hear Andy Burnham mention climate breakdown.
Yet another fire season that has been made more severe due to the burning of fossil fuels - displacing communities, killing ecosystems, putting huge strain on health systems & fire fighting capacities. New @wwattribution.bsky.social study on Canada www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-chan...
Is “pragmatic” the new, “grown up” word? Andy, there’s nothing “pragmatic” about drilling for more oil & gas - to even consider it with the planet literally on fire is total madness. How many times must we say it will do nothing for energy bills or security? It would be an act of utter recklessness
ExxonMobil will report second quarter earnings in a few days. Most analysts expect profits for the quarter will more than double compared to last year, from $7 billion to about $16 billion.
250 years of burning fossil fuels fuelled a record shattering humid heatwave in Eastern North America for the 250th anniversary celebrations on 4th of July. Turning any outdoor activities into a dangerous health risk. - @wwattribution.bsky.socialwww.worldweatherattribution.org/fossil-fuels...
Is Lliuya v RWE reshaping climate litigation? In our new paper, Petra & I unpack the court’s approach to causation, risk, and nuisance law, examine its limited engagement with physics and IPCC science, and why this matters for future climate claims. shorturl.at/yxJuo
NEW: An estimated 7% of the entire population of the critically-endangered Tapanuli Orangutan were killed in a single weather event, according to research led by Borneo Futures with @frediotto.bsky.social as an author.
An estimated 58 Orangutans were killed by landslides during Cyclone Senyar (1/4)
Worried about El niño? Conflict and climate change are much bigger drivers of risk, on extreme heat across Asia. During the last El Niño climate change was by far the largest driver of extreme heat, while conflict in West Asia makes people much more vulnerable & exposed. doi.org/10.1016/j.wa...
Every year now, the pre-monsoon heat (the hottest time of year in South Asia with temperatures well over 40°C) starts earlier & lasts longer - due to human-induced climate change - exposing 1billion people to deadly heat. @wwattribution.bsky.socialwww.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-chan...
NEW: Players and fans face increased heat danger at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, since USA '94.
Our results show that from Miami to Kansas City, climate change is increasing the risk of playing the World Cup in much of the northern hemisphere during summer. (1/2)

A heat dome in north America is producing record-shattering March temperatures, made even more deadly by human-caused warming. A super-rapid study from @wwattribution.bsky.social shows the risk of temperatures as high as these is now four times what it was just a decade ago 😱
RAPID ANALYSIS: It would be ‘virtually impossible’ for the record-breaking March heat currently scorching the U.S. West to occur without climate change.
We are seeing summer-like temperatures arrive exceptionally early from the Pacific to the Rockies this week. 🧵1/4

Quadruple whammy: High exposure, vulnerability, La Niña and human-induced climate change turned very heavy rainfall into a disastrous deluge around the Limpopo, Umbeluzi, Maputo, Incomati, Save and Buzi rivers. - new @wwattribution.bsky.social study www.worldweatherattribution.org/la-nina-clim...
While Australian heatwaves were some of the very first extreme events attributed to climate change, people still underestimate how much worse they got - killing more people than all other natural hazards combined. New @wwattribution.bsky.social study. www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-chan...
Looking back to @wwattribution.bsky.social studies in 2025 showed again, in stark terms, how unfairly the consequences of human-induced climate change are distributed. The world does not have to be like this, we have a lot of agency to make it better. www.worldweatherattribution.org/unequal-evid...
Two years ago, we did a study on a devastating drought in the Fertil Crescent. Due to climate change and water governance disputes the drought is still ongoing. Teheran might be running out of water, if it doesn't start raining soon. Our update: www.worldweatherattribution.org/human-induce...
I might have failed at my assignment from @fisherdanar.bsky.social to say what makes me hopeful about climate, but I think @frediotto.bsky.social and her team's work that would enable us to hold polluters responsible should be a source of hope.

If we do not seriously move away from burning fossil fuels, hurricanes like Melissa will only become worse. Already today Melissa tested the limits of what preparedness and adaptation can do. These limits are very real for everyone in the Caribbean. www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-chan...
The Paris Agreement offers a powerful framework for a fairer, healthier world. But as extreme heat shows, every tenth of a degree matters. We need higher ambition to stop violating the rights of ever more people. - new @wwattribution.bsky.social study
