The whole process of earnest effort is pointless if directed at end points, prizes. To be of value, to be worthwhile, to be meaningful, effort can only be selfless - not in a Christian moral 'unselfiesh' register, it requires direction away from the self.

I don't mean to be patronising in including the old saw at the end. I checked a couple of LLMs to see if they understood, and they were at sea. Even though they have access to the idiom, they can't apply it out of context - part of their usual blindness.

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.
