Today is #AdaLovelaceDay #ald26 to highlight and celebrate #womenInSTEM today and throughout history. While they have faced discrimination and been too often forgotten, if you look for them, they were there! Here’s my most recent #sciart portrait and a thread of my scientist portraits. #histsci 🧪

Day 12 #spacetober_challenge is Roman Space Telescope so I made a new portrait of its namesake #astronomer Nancy Grace Roman (1925-2018), NASA’s 1st chief of astronomy throughout the 60s & 70s, who helped shape the space astronomy program. 👩🏼‍🔬🔭🎢🧪🐡 #histsci Nicknamed “mother of Hubble” for her role in

It's #InternationalCatDay, so we just have to share these Gatos Andinos again 🐈 These two were spotted down the ridge from NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory. 🔭🧪 Because they live in such remote mountain terrain, seeing them up close like this is an incredibly rare treat 🐱 📷: SOAR Day Crew

I saw a local beaver dam last week

Beavers did what millions in grey infrastructure couldn't. After beavers were reintroduced to an urban park in West London, flooding at Greenford Tube stopped, biodiversity boomed, and the council scrapped costly flood defence plans. Work with nature, not against it. www.npr.org/2026/05/21/n...

I really enjoyed Omens of Chaos and would love a sequel! It definitely worked for me, and the extent of my MtG knowledge is whatever I’ve learned from Seanan McGuire’s posts.

Seanan McGuire@seananmcguire.bsky.social

I am not there today, but starting tomorrow you can find me haunting the Biblioplex like a very earnest ghost. Come talk to me about OMENS OF CHAOS! Get a friendship bracelet, and make my sequel more likely!

Amazing find in Atlanta: the Center for Puppetry Arts. The Jim Henson gallery was awesome. Memory lane time: Sesame Street, Muppets, The Dark Crystal, Fraggle Rock, Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas & more. Henson was a genius with these puppets.

And I just read T. Kingfisher’s Wolf Worm…

Screwworm has been detected only 25 miles from the Texas/Mexico border. Seems inevitable this species will re-establish this summer in the United States (it was eradicated in the 1960s).

I’ve really been enjoying this podcast

Exploration. Discovery. Danger. A Steerswoman goes where she must. The Steerswoman book series doesn't have a TV show or movies (yet?) so I put this together from other sources! Highly recommend the books - they're a lot of fun! Details: archiveofourown.org/works/78622921 Happy #Festivids2025!

"Selena believed, with every fiber of her being, that a person’s worth was not defined by how hard they worked or how productive they managed to be. She also believed just as strongly that this did not apply to her." ...I am feeling so called out by this book already. (Snake-Eater, T. Kingfisher.)

I went and read a bit more about this today. I hate the look of AI mixed with a password manager that people depend on, especially when you shouldn't have to be technical to use it and understand what it's doing with your private information.

Volunteered at the library book sale last week and managed not to come home with any new books, so victory, I guess? Did acquire some impressive bruises from moving boxes.

Really enjoyed this!

Oliver Darkshire's Isabella Nagg and the Pot of Basil is a delightful, Pratchett-esque story brimming with footnotes and satire, and inspired by one character in Boccaccio’s The Decameron. Read @vfarmstrong.com's review! reactormag.com/book-review-...

Just finished The River Has Roots, weekend fiction is Back After This by Linda Holmes, nonfiction is Black in Blues by Imani Perry.

John Wiswell@wiswell.bsky.social

If you see this, quote it with what you're reading this weekend! I'm finishing up Poul Anderson's The Broken Sword (history/saga-type storytelling is catnip for me), and excited to crack open Amal el-Mohtar's The River Has Roots next.
