Classicist, writer, that sort of stuff. Currently teaching Latin to the youth. Yes, my dog's name is Adverb.

The early voting line is surprisingly long, but then, we did show up right as it started. I'm not complaining, mind. Civic engagement!

I'm not sure I'm any healthier today than yesterday, but I've dragged myself to work regardless. I hate teaching while masked (and doubly so when my voice is this rough), but we're all gonna cope. Thank god for Mucinex and a big aur purifier, right? So much work to catch up. Ugh.

While this is a scientifically-backed procedure, I have also been advised to take a specific supplement that some research has shown has positive benefits. As it's a mad weird supplement, however, no Normal website sells it, so ive just sent £65 to a site called something like "nature's casserole"

Woke up feeling wretched, and so I'm sitting in bright light half an hour before my alarm, writing out a sub plan to email in and wondering if I'll have enough energy today to work on the grading I brought home Friday and haven't touched since. Whee!

Got the inbox down to 10. I would go back to bed if I thought I could sleep. Ugh. I really hoped to be better today! There are only three school days this week, and this is the second I'm missing! Then a very long weekend! ...my Latin 1 students will have forgotten verbs entirely by next Tuesday.

(And not unexpectedly, my spouse is now down with the same nasty cold. We're gonna be reduced to texting "Gondor calls for aid!" back and forth to each other from separate rooms of the apartment at this rate.)

This is not the worst possible week in which to leave my students to the mercy of worksheets and "please study this material, and take a stab at this other bit on your own", but it sure isn't a /good/ week for it. Still. Showing up infectious and croaking out my words wouldn't help them much either!

...I still need to fill out the DDI spreadsheet for all those quizzes that I haven't finished grading yet. Maybe I'll have energy, just not the capability of coherent speech, later today, and I can do that. I hope. 20 unread work emails, and I'm supposed to attend a conference Thursday. D:

This is a good point. I got death threats from Hindu nationalists for writing a history article on my website explaining that Hindi was an Indo-European language. They messaged the president of my university and various other admins, trying to get me fired.

Look, I'm not trying to be unsympathetic to the politicians in the article. But non-pols get these threats daily. Woman got doxxed and their kids threatened for disclosing they were harassed by a serial predator. I got an artisanal hand-written death threat mailed to my apartment. Deal with it.

Long shot, but does anyone out there still remember a discontinued Kerastase hair oil called Oleo-Relax Discipline, or something like it? It came in a deep orange bottle and smelled like faint sharp roses and I can't find anywhere that still has it and will sell it to me. Halp?

I run a science communication consulting business. I built it on Twitter. Since Musk took over, it’s been professionally unusable and unpleasant. Getting off of there has been an easy ethical and professional choice.

I am way too online for my own good, and I had an unreasonably large twitter following, and I really *enjoyed* twitter for a lot of years, and yet leaving there and never looking back was maybe the easiest what-felt-like-a-big-ethical decision I've ever made.

Fun fact: if you stand right outside the gates of Hell, you can hear Christopher Columbus. He didn't discover that place, either. But he sounds like he's learning a lot.

Well that puppetry class was bloody lovely. Really nice to be in a room full of people doing slightly daft things to make something happen. Also humans are FASCINATING. Like, stick a couple of eyes on a thing and make it move with some sticks and BOOM, that's a little guy right there.

Still sick. I prepped for this Friday, so there was a sub arranged and worksheets printed and PTO requested before I left work that day. Teaching being what it is, I'm probably still gonna spend half of today on grading & paperwork. But not talking! Not talking is important, for recovery purposes.

We've lived for so long with this mythology that sure, the wealthy can be cruel. But at least the cruelty has a point. Profit! I'd like us to open our hearts to other possibilities. Power doesn't just corrupt! It can also breed truly reality-distorting levels of incompetence.

My husband did his graduate thesis building a LLM for emergency services that he hand-trained on public tweets posted during Hurricane Irma. He found that there was a marked period of "oh no the storm is an imminent threat" followed by a separate distinct "shitposting is my new god now" phase.

Okay, so based on how I'm feeling today, choosing on Friday to make sub plans and request Monday off for recovery was the /right call/. I'm not sure I have the energy to play Pokopia, the most soothing video game known to humanity.

Every damn time I get sick I come back a day too early, and discover by second period that what feels fine while sitting on the couch is not so fine when speaking nigh-constantly and doing intellectual/social work for nine hours straight. But this time! I'm learning from experience!!!

If I don't feel like I'm "just fine" and malingering by noon tomorrow, I may need to take Tuesday off as well. I hope not.
