Gar's novels - a thread. First, we've got the Black Iron Legacy series, starting with THE GUTTER PRAYER. Three thieves - runaway Carillon Thay, slowly petrifying Spar, and corpse-eating ghoul-monster Rat - get embroiled in a web of intrigue and sorcery. Crazed gods, alchemy-punk, high weirdness.

One advantage of writing an adventure that retraces the history of the gaming hobby is that I get to be *extremely* petty about very obscure things that have annoyed me for thirty-something years.

Saw a great quote from a Brazilian (ironically on a site which tried to steer the election for the fascists). “The streets have no algorithm!”

First five rpgs. 1. MERP 2. Red Box D&D 3. Fighting Fantasy 4. Probably some home-brew Aliens thing 5. Probably WHFRP (Order of the last two very hazy). Then at Warpcon IV - Call of Cthulhu, Paranoia.

My first 5 TTRPGs, in the order I played them: 1. Star Frontiers. I’mone of those oddballs who didn’t start with D&D 2. D&D of some variety. Didn’t take long for me to land here 3. Boot Hill 4. The James Bond RPG from Victory Games. It was run… poorly 5. 2E AD&D, college in the early 90s

Well, given #ttrpg players are all feckless ingrates who just turn up and spend three hours doing little dances they expect to be rewarded with marshmallow fairy cakes, while the GM does all the *actual* work, I'm surprised more GM guides aren't like 400 pages long and spattered with dried blood.

Who would be stupid enough to make a GM's book longer than the corebook? Well those people are just looking to excuse their own frailty. It's out now in PDF at @drivethrurpg.com: www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/5... and print pre-order with free PDF: handiwork.games/product/pre-... #maskwitches

the idea phase is the easiest and least valuable part of professional creativity. read the first draft of the first Star Wars if you doubt me Great art is made in the grinding, often miserable collision between the ethereal substance of an idea and the mud and blood and friction of reality

Oh, the days of buying a new Bioware game and blitzing through it in a sleepless weekend. I vividly remember the first fight with Saren. Baldur's Gate. Fuck's sake.

@kevinkulp.bsky.social recommended “The Dungeon Book” by @mytholder.bsky.social so I picked it up and can report that Kevin did steer me wrong. An utter delight from start to finish. Clever, tongue-in-cheek and heartfelt. Goes in directions I did not expect and loved it for that. A++

Kevin Kulp@kevinkulp.bsky.social

An infant princess is kidnapped into a vast dungeon, and she grows up there making it her own. The prose is beautiful, the plotting just what I wanted. Recommended.

Q: What did you do this morning, Gareth, as part of a paying job for a grown-up? As, in fact, a work of art? A: Statted the Trivial Pursuit wheel as a giant monster.

Re the last repost, one of the things that has stuck from my time in the behavioural science snake oil mines was an experiment where if people planned a week of movie viewing they would pick a mix of genres, some 'highbrow' etc but if they picked day to day it was all the same stuff

The box for this game is EXACTLY 12-inches long. You know what that means, don't you? The game is a foot.

And it’s finally announced! This is a weird one - basically AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS meets PIRANESI in Spaaaaaaaace.

There are TWO new books coming for #CoriolisTheGreatDark Across the Abyss - an explorer themed campaign where they have drawn inspiration from The Terror, among other things, written by Gareth Hanrahan! Free Leauge are very pleased with his work. The Dying City is a source book about Ship City.
