Fairly complete description of the drastic and potentially fatal changes to American science 🧪. Some highlights: -Peer review likely to be less influential in grant decisions, with political appointees sticking their noses in it. -publication costs not allowable -cont'd

Good news y’all 😉 Scene in Radio is back!

Scene on Radio@sceneonradio.bsky.social

After 18 months of work, we dropped eps 1 and 2 of our new season, The News. We think this project is making some real interventions, as @chenjerai.bsky.social likes to say, into the scattered and confused debates about "the media." BREAKING: We filed another emergency lawsuit — this time in federal court — against Louisiana officials for suspending the state's primary election after voting has already begun. Louisiana is disenfranchising voters who have already cast ballots, all in the service of stifling Black voting power.

Everyone gets so obsessed with LARGE wood to form wood jams. Remember, y'all, it takes poorly sorted wood to form a jam that can actually do something. That means SMALL wood, too! It takes diversity (alternatively, poorly sorted/well graded size distribution)!

Perhaps, but I hope we will instead collectively respond to this with a giant "FUCK THAT" and fight back. Divided, we will inevitably lose, even if we find temporary sanctuary elsewhere. In solidarity, we can overcome. Find an organization, get involved, and fight like hell.

I can't imagine what would more effectively recruit US scientific talent to other countries around the world than destroying universities, eliminating research funding, and demonizing the very concept of expertise.

Wood racking on a river channel split (bifurcation) can dramatically alter channel shape and how that split evolves (avulses). Here's a particularly extreme example from the Skykomish River, WA, USA. (flow bottom to top)

NEW UNRULY SUBJECTS! How can we defeat authoritarianism? I talked with Mikyung Ryu of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions about South Korea’s fight against martial law, the role of labor, and what movements in the U.S. can learn from it. tinyurl.com/7rfaefd9 youtube.com/shorts/OUU7s...

I just need to post some geomorphology for a second. Preferential erosion along a joint set formed a mini canyon-within-a-canyon. First picture shows the mini canyon, second looks back upstream at it. This is the kind of thing that got me into geomorphology.

Given Trump’s Easter threats to carry out new war crimes in Iran, we should think one or two steps ahead about a coup attempt connected to the war. And then deter it. (1/17)

IT'S TIIIIIIMMMMMMEEEEEEEE!! Drastic times call for drastic measures. If you can stay home, AWESOME. If you can't, please consider NOT BUYING anything that day. The POINT is the pressure of OUR POWER. #MAYDay #May1st #GeneralStrike #NOBusinessAsUSUAL www.commondreams.org/news/no-king...

This is extremely important. Big protests are great ways to recruit for local orgs who oppose the regime.

If you think No Kings is too vague or insufficiently radical, I sincerely encourage you to go to your local No Kings rally tomorrow and hand out flyers/zines to recruit folks to your org/cause. It's a perfect recruitment event! Thousands of people eager to DO STUFF! Get out there!

This bike shop reopened as a worker-owned cooperative in Brooklyn, New York City. Now its workers own the store and have direct control over their schedule, compensation, and working conditions. This kind of freedom is possible for every working person. It's called economic democracy, and it works.

So when thousands of women (and children) were being duplicated--including in non-consensual AI porn--it was no big deal. But it took "only a 15-sec clip" of these two famous white men to draw outrage and fear. Gotcha. Cool cool.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

It took only a 15-second clip of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt duking it out on a crumbling rooftop — made by A.I. with a two-sentence prompt and the click of a button — to draw swift outrage, and sizable fear, from Hollywood. "It’s nothing short of terrifying," one scriptwriter said.
