The new Deep Time Trail to Siccar Point, opened this year to mark the tercentenary of the birth of geologist James Hutton, now has the interpretation this famous and important site deserves. Great work by @scottishgeology.bsky.social and Edinburgh Geological Society and donors.

Out today: We show that Westlothiana lizziae or "Lizzie," described 35 years ago as the world's oldest reptile - is not a stem amniote at all, but a stem tetrapod. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
May I rant? I complained years ago about incorrect information on BBC Bitesize (a learning resource). They said the info was archived and couldn't be updated when things changed (it was wrong to start with). Now they've redrawn the diagram with same error ... www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/gui...

This is a fantastic free resource for finding out about Britain's geology and also seeing how interpretations have changed with time.

Scottish geologist James Hutton immortalised in Permo-Triassic red sandstone, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh. So radical in his ideas that they’ve put him in a cage. @nationalgalleries.bsky.social
Are you starting to plan for the autumn? Great news, the Centre for Open Learning at Edinburgh University have restarted our introductory, in-person geology courses this term, taught by me and Fiona McGibbon. col.ed.ac.uk/lifelong-lea...
My wife Penny has built the Green Team from a tiny charity to the force that it is today: making a huge difference in young peoples' lives. It's tough to keep charities going and growing. Please support us in the Kiltwalk. We'll be litter-picking as we go. www.justgiving.com/fundraising/...

The Construction Historian likes a nice old brick. I may have mentioned this before... Here is a very important initiative to try to put two major brick collections and a database onto a more sustainable footing for the future. If you agree, let them know. www.mining-landscapes.org/news/announc...
Good. Looks like just about all the gorse has burned from beneath Salisbury Craigs. But it will just grow back, and fires will continue. What's the cost of the emergency response, the lost wildlife and biodiversity and cost to human health of the smoke? Should the gorse be managed differently?
Better news: the fire has died down this morning. Fire crews have been on site all night:

Welcome to the wee Spiorad aird nam Murchan Gallery, please do pop by if you’re local or visiting the peninsula. It was one of my biggest hopes and dreams that this ongoing project of the last almost ten years (and many years into the future) would have a permanent home within place it was made 🙏🏻
Wow! A hectic couple of days setting up, but Spiorad aird nam Murchan Gallery is now fully installed and open at the Ardnamurchan Natural History Centre. A huge thanks to Sandra & Aaron for all the support and believing to give the work a permanent home within the communities it was made. (1/2)

A pleasure. Good company, fine views on a lovely sunny morning.
Thanks to ANGUS MILLER, the well-known geologist, for showing us ‘The view from Calton Hill: James Hutton’s Edinburgh’, on our HUTTON TERCENTENARY WALK on 20 June, celebrating the ‘father of geology’ (dates 3 June 1726 – 26 March 1797), and of course all who came to our event. @geowalks.scot

Well. I hadn't realised the Volcano World Cup was underway. Nice to see that Scotland is leading this poll AND the group table in the other world cup. Happy days. @scottishgeology.bsky.social
It is time for the Volcano World Cup Group C. This is a tough one. If anything it is a group of death but the problem is there are *zero* eruptions in the past ~11,000 years in the entire group. Have fun casting your ballot! eruptions.site/2026/06/15/v... #volcanoworldcup #worldcup
