A new year... a fresh, clean start! Time for me to post about the various pieces of media I've consumed this year. Sometimes games, sometimes movies, sometimes books and others. It's a magical world out there... ...let's go exploring.

Black Messa (PC, 2020): A mixed bag. Combat is more action-y, levels are more complex and the new puzzles are cool. But they often got rid of certain details without replacing them with anything. It struggles to find an identity, trying to be both remake and its own thing. Xen was my favorite part.

I'll never forgive Nintendo Youtubers in the mid 2010s collectively gaslighting people into believing the only good 3D Mario games are Sunshine and 64. I've never had more fun than playing the well-crafted levels of Galaxy 2 and 3D World. Screw collecting random junk, gimme interesting challenges.

We are examining the internet with a team of perverts to determine whether Midna or Toriel did more long term damage.

I hate the argument "With this remaster, the developers can finally create the game they always wanted to make". Buddy, if they had had the horse power to do what they wanted back then, Mario 64 would have basically been Mario 3D World. It's a game almost entirely grown from hardware limitations.

Every game is a product of its time, and that's fine. Limitation breeds innovation. Mario 64 basically gave birth to 3D platformers and collectathons. If they had been able to do what they wanted to do (i.e. Mario 3D World), I doubt the genre would have taken off as much as it did.

I don't like the idea of restricting certain enemies/attacks/levels to certain difficulties. Just because I want to have an easier time does not mean I want to experience less of the game. I like the cool enemies! I want to adapt to them! I just don't want to be punished too harshly for my mistakes.
