It was such a pleasure to co-organise the workshop that led to this roundtable (with @mikahyman.bsky.social), and to think about creatively and playfully juxtaposing very different genres of sources

I love the writing process. I think lots of people who do writing like the act of writing, but I think this is so important and under-appreciated by a lot of people. Revision processes (including asking others for input, revising oneself) is thinking, crafting, strengthening.
... It explores the continuing importance of Sivasundaram’s intervention in global histories of the sciences.
And shows how historically oriented scholars across disciplines are experimenting with cross-contextual approaches to illuminate marginalized and overlooked voices, worlds and stories.

Our entire roundtable on "Cross-Contextualization as Method", co-edited with @mikahyman.bsky.social, is out now in FirstView in @historicaljnl.bsky.social!
doi.org/10.1017/S001...
Sujit Sivasundaram (@camhistory.bsky.social) re-examines the contexts that shaped "Sciences and the global", and, reflecting on how these have since transformed, explores how cross-contextualization as a method has changed more broadly.
doi.org/10.1017/S001...
In the final dialogue, Rabia Abba Omar (Stellenbosch University) and Theo Di Castri (@homertoncollege.bsky.social) highlight the importance of collaborations with artists and activists to reckon with silence, memory, and violence in archives and beyond
doi.org/10.1017/S001...
Based on a workshop at @hpscambridge.bsky.social last year, the roundtable explores how historically oriented scholars have experimented with "cross-contextualization" in the 15 years since Sujit Sivasundaram's (@camhistory.bsky.social) groundbreaking "Sciences and the Global" doi.org/10.1086/652694
The roundtable kicks off with a dialogue between Jeremy Schneider (@cornelluniversity.bsky.social) and Siyakha Mguni (University of Cape Town), exploring the ways in which the lithosphere can be read as an archive and a storyteller. doi.org/10.1017/S001...

Looking forward to speaking about mantises, tricksters, and misunderstandings across the 18th-century Cape of Good Hope's colonial frontier at the Global Intellectual History Seminar at All Souls @ox.ac.uk
(I should note that the flyer has promoted me to a higher position)
While most other journalists ran with the Arday story as their summer sport, we've been looking at Cambridge for years, and @hardeepmatharu.bsky.social's investigation into the impact of Arday's death on his students and fellow academics is fearless and also heartbreaking. Genuine reporting
The story of Jason Arday is the story of James Orr.
Of the ideology which has found a foothold in Cambridge University, fostering the sorts of ideas that formed the undercurrents – sometimes explicit; sometimes unconscious – against Arday.
I returned to my alma mater for an in-depth exploration 👇
Congratulations to the nominees in the 2026 @WolfsonHistory Prize.
You can find reading related to four of the shortlisted titles in the History Today archive.

Delighted to announce that my first book, The Tartar Moment: Crises and the Globalization of Chinese Knowledges in Early Modern Europe, is under advance contract with @uchicagopress.bsky.social!
The book argues that the Manchu conquest made China matter immensely to Europeans in times of crisis
I am delighted to announce that I have recently begun a new role of Reviews Editor for The Historical Journal:
www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
In this role, I commission review essays on all aspects of history since the fifteenth century.
📣 We are delighted to announce that Dr Koji Hirata
@khirata.bsky.social will be joining The Historical Journal
team as Reviews Editor!
Dr Hirata’s research spans modern China, Japan, and
Russia/the Soviet Union, while encompassing broader
interests in global histories of capitalism and socialism.
(Sigh.) How easy it must be to do history if it is mostly 'the statistical comparison of similar past events' - an illusion which history teachers have then to unteach over and over again.
I cringed at the phrasing, but it's actually a wise thing to impress upon first years who have likely spent their adolescence being (& working hard to be) the brightest person in the room that they ought not rely on that as their source of worth, because for most it will no longer be true.
There's predictable consternation at this among the various unashamedly excellent Atlases and Übermensch on X.
I read it as an old tutor saying to a bunch of 18 year olds, we know you're all clever - you're at Cambridge - but you're here for more than that.
@gianamar97.bsky.social's research highlights how contingent geopolitical designations reshaped scholarly descriptions of natures and cultures in southern Africa. Link 👇

I've written a post on our 1000-year-old astrolabe, and have included details of the places/latitudes of the plates and the stars on the rete. (I do not read Arabic, sadly, so have drawn on previous transcriptions - if there are errors, do let me know!)
