It's really damning. The accusations are numerous and well-supported. But I was really struck by the descriptions of Trump's behavior -- the name dropping, strong-arming, and attempts to buy off silence. His gross rivalry with Epstein. It's all so familiar. It's shit he's been doing his entire life.

FOMC week. The FOMC claims there is an inflation problem and says nothing about its employment mandate in its statement. In the minutes, the labor market is characterized as close to maximum employment, and below the SEP median long run rate. The FOMC is sanguine about the labor market.

More importantly for the American people, the FOMC is misjudging the strength of the labor market. The labor market is now below maximum employment. That is why wage growth is weak. Besides weak wage growth, the unemployment rate is high--not low, as assumed by the FOMC.

High inflation is not from a tight labor market. So the FOMC has a difficult trade off, owing to Trumpian supply-side distortions. They have to sacrifice workers to get inflation down.

I would note that since 2015 ex the 2020-mid 21 pandemic period, the unemployment rate has been 4.3% or lower for 75% of the time. So the current rate is not low, its a bit worse than typical.

The FOMC characterization makes policy easy--raise rates as inflation is too high. This is hard for the new Chair, as his master is Trump, not the American people. Expect some dissent on Wednesday.

Drezner has labeled 2026 as Trump's year of retreat on u.s. foreign policy, noting how the Iran's response to our war has led us to withdraw from bases and embassies in the Middle East. This aspect of the loss to Iran seems under appreciated.

This was like his 3rd glitch during the speech where he just randomly stops mid-sentence and makes a weird noise or, in this case, just opens his mouth and freezes for 3 seconds while saying nothing, then continues. Pretty sad that TV networks refuse to cover this situation.
