So, he's not clubbing and not going to restaurants and walking out without paying the bill? THIS GUY IS SO BAD AT BEING CORRUPT!

Never use a Recursive's Flint 40b to write a joke for you: A man buys a sailboat. He sails out into the ocean. He's not an experienced sailor. He hits a storm. He's terrified. He prays. The storm passes. He sees land. He sails toward it. He crashes into a reef. The boat sinks.

He says, "What?" The parrot says, "The cave. You took the chest. The cave is the treasure." He goes back. The cave is empty. He says, "I don't get it." The parrot says, "You had to get to the cave to get the treasure. But you took the treasure and left. The cave was the journey." The man says,

"I don't understand." The parrot says, "Neither do I. But I'm a parrot." The man laughs. The parrot laughs. They both laugh until they cry.

He swims to shore. He's on a small island. He sees a cave. He goes in. Inside is a treasure chest. He opens it. It's full of gold. He's rich. He takes it. He walks back to his boat. It's gone. He cries. Then he hears a noise. He turns. A parrot says, "You should have taken the cave."

The Gestapo has arrived in Puerto Rico.

Armed ICE agents are moving through Puerto Rican neighborhoods with assault rifles, threatening residents who film them with pepper spray. In Villa Capri, a restaurant owner refused agents entry when they tried to enter without a warrant. Watch and share everywhere!

The first time I got the police called on me I was 10 years old. A white girl stole and broke my glasses and knew everyone would side with her if she cried and pretended I choked her because I was not white. This was not the last time something like this would happen as a kid.

I was in the top 1% of Duolingo users in 2025. I still haven't met anyone that puts in more work learning languages on there than me. AMA!

LLMs are cool for doing lots of things with a computer but I think the most useful it has been for me is for mapping out a more efficient low-energy system for my tinyhouse. Though A.I. I've been able to simulate different scenarios before implementing them.

Over the next year I will develope a way to harvest electricity from a wood fire during winter months when the solar panel isn't able to power the house's battery. When successful, I would take this invention to my regular house. I couldn't do this without A.I. it would be too much work.

The first time I came across Vivek was at a VC conference that he MC'd at. I knew at that moment he was a slimy ass fuckwit. The fund was led by Indian entrepreneurs and so at the time he was talking about the importance of diversity in tech. This man believes in nothing but his own wealth.

It's interesting when Dutch people ask me about The Bronx. They really want me to confirm their movie dreams about the place. One today asked me about the guns. Me: Yeah, America has guns so the Bronx has guns. It's not a Bronx issue, it's an American issue. They didn't like that answer.

I've been at Union Square which is about as tourist Manhattan as you can get and someone was firing a gun like it was nothing. If America didn't have guns, New York would be safer. It's just that simple.

Most of them are city workers, FDNY and NYPD and the friends and family of city workers, FDNY and NYPD. They just need to put metal barriers on the curb like they do in the UK.

Miser@misernyc.bsky.social

It's crazy how often you hear about "bikes on the sidewalk" when this is the actual reality in NYC

The latest whacky bug from Duolingo is in the German via Dutch lesson where it just switches to English even though the UI is still in Dutch. Which leads me to believe that they might be running some live translation agent automatically translating the English version into Dutch?

No thank you! This would be inconvenient for me personally. Please stop talking about it. Also, war is bad.

My only Xmas wish is that I would very much appreciate it if there isn't a world war where Europe and the US are in opposition. That would probably make my life very complicated in the interim.

First of all, a fight where a bear and an eagle team up against a lion and 12 suns, the lion wouldn't have to do anything, even one sun would vaporize both the eagle and the bear easily. They have 11 spare suns. You can't beat that.

"those companies are constrained by their actual business." Is something that we'll probably be seeing a lot more of in startup pitch decks.

Poland’s Foreign Minister Sikorski: basically calling Trump a liar. “The US no longer finances this war since January of last year. In other words, for more than a year and a half. The US has not contributed a single cent to the defense of Ukraine. We are doing it. Europe.”

It's crazy to me that I'm able to read this now and have instincts in this language. Hopefully someday I'll go into the Hebrides and actually use it.

It's interesting how all the western European languages connect up a little bit and enough to have a sort of logical framework that allows you to at least come to an understanding with someone who doesn't speak the same language as you.

The other day I was speaking with a Dutchman using a combination of German and Dutch with a smattering of English because he didn't really know much English. This makes me think that this is how Europe operated for centuries. Which is why you can have small language enclaves such as Friesian.

Oh the day I had digging for the foundations of our new tiny house. I discovered that the waste line was actually in the way of the supports and so I had the fun job of dismantling and reconstructing a waste line (read poop-chute). So it's gonna be another weekend of work before we can place it.

Most people don't appreciate the infrastructure that goes into running water, energy and waste disposal. Anyone who is actively working against paying taxes is also actively working against these privileges. Without community we have no society. That's just facts.

there is perhaps nothing more socially corrosive that tech has done, structurally, than create a class of unaccountable founder-executives people whose power can only be checked by a declining stock price

Learning German via Dutch has been a trip but I found my first error where the words match but the Dutch word is not a commonly used one. I'm sure there are more errors like this to come but I wonder if they choose these over the top words just to engage the user or if it is an A.I. made hiccup.

One of my many highlights of SNP conference was having my youngest son, Matthew, by my side. He is on the cusp of adulthood, just as Scotland is on the cusp of statehood. My greatest task is to leave Scotland a better place - the best place it can be - for him.

how long can a car company stay afloat by simply announcing made up products that dont exist, have no real world applications and will never make it to market? buddy, we’re going to find out

Objectively speaking Leni Riefenstahl was an amazing cinematographer and her films are gorgeous. But she's still a Nazi and belongs in the dustbin of history.

Alex Hern@hern.bsky.social

do think there's a danger of looking at extremely cool shit like a car driving upside down then doing a kickflip before landing, and convincing yourself it's actually lame because the guy funding it is a white supremacist

I just hit 1,000 days on Duolingo and my feeling on it remains the same. You get what you put in. You do the goals to learn the languages. If you do the goals then you are doing the work. The reward is language learning. If you want that reward, work towards it.

NYU is a private university. It makes no sense that this isn’t an investment of the same in CUNY.
