These things are mutually exclusive. You can only mitigate the social, environmental and economic impact of AI by rejecting it. There is no 'ethical use'. The Society of Authors has betrayed all of its members and all human authors everywhere.

'keep moving' and 'skip ahead to fill in gaps' (with no chance of returning to see the panels missed) - which failed to recognise that people actually wanted to see the tapestry ... by the end I felt really hassled, despite moving at pace. A very mixed experience, tilting to the disappointing. 2/2

Congratulations Elva and all involved! We're thrilled to see our own @ninacnock.bsky.social's analysis of an episode from the Franciscan A4 Acallam included here. A lot more to come from Dr Cnockaert-Guillou on this witness in the future! Comhghairdeas leat, Nina.

Really proud of this volume of Analecta Hibernica, periodical of the Irish Manuscripts Commission. As editor I have encouraged more Irish language texts and more women as editors - thinking about the sources for Irish history in their wonderful diversity

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

A reminder that registration is open!

In our latest video, we turn to the Ordnance Survey correspondence of John O’Donovan! In this tale, he encounters a man named Donnelly in County Kildare, who was convinced he had discovered the location of Fionn Mac Cumhaill’s hidden treasure! @ria.ie #fiannaiocht #fionnmaccumhail #folklore

This is very much a real thing; even if a bunch of media outlets reported it quite sloppily and some of the numbers ended up needlessly overstated. If this was a normal industry it'd just be a fixable planning consideration. But tech is panic-building thousands so it's something bigger

On 4/16, we're celebrating Natasha Sumner's new work, Heroes of the Gael: A History of Fionn and the Fianna (Princeton Uni Press, 2026) Joining Sumner for a discussion of Irish folklore are Geraldine Parsons (Uni of Glasgow), Ciara Ní Riain (Harvard), & Ray Cashman (Indiana Uni)

I'm very excited to be involved in this event, marking the publication of a very significant new contribution to the study of Finn Cycle literature - and, as it demonstrates, therefore to pan-Gaelic culture - if you are in anywhere near Boston, we'd love to see you there!

Our own Geraldine Parsons @gparsons.bsky.social will discuss the important new book "Heroes of the Gael: A History of Fionn and the Fianna" by Natasha Sumner (@princetonupress.bsky.social), next week in Boston @bc-irish-studies.bsky.social. events.bc.edu/event/heroes...

events.bc.eduHeroes of the Gael: A History of Fionn and the FiannaA book symposium for Natasha Sumner's new publication, Heroes of the Gael: A History of Fionn and the Fianna We're celebrating Natasha Sumner's (Harvard University) new work, Heroes of the Gael: A History of Fionn and the Fianna (Princeton University Press, 2026). Joining Sumner for a discussion of Irish folklore are Geraldine Parsons (University of Glasgow), Ciara Ní Riain (Harvard University), and Ray Cashman (Indiana University Bloomington). Natasha Sumner's research focuses on the Gaelic narrative corpus about the hero Fionn Mac Cumhaill, with particular regard for Fenian folklore. She is interested in the historical development of the corpus and the conditions for the transmission and narration of folklore. She has also worked on intertextuality in eighteenth-century Scottish Gaelic literature. Geraldine Prasons works primarily on the literature and language of the medieval and early modern Gaelic-speaking world, with a particular interest in the material centered on the legendary hero Finn mac Cumaill (later Finn/Fionn Mac Cumhaill/McCool), known as fíanaigecht literature. Her research often focuses on the major Middle Irish text at the heart of that corpus, Acallam na Senórach (The Colloquy of the Ancients). Ciara Ní Riain's research focuses on Irish language and literature on both sides of the Atlantic, particularly from the seventeenth century to the present day. These interests are linked by a shared concern with nationalism, culture, and identity. She has also worked on post-medieval manuscript transmission and preservation, as well as biographical narratives on the history of the American West. Ray Cashman is Provost Professor of Folklore at Indiana University Bloomington. he is the author of two prize-winning books: Storytelling on the Northern Irish Border: Characters and Community (2008) and Packy Jim: Folklore and Worldview on the Irish Border (2016), as well as numerous articles and essays. Elected a fellow and board member of the American Folklore Society, Cashman has served as editor of the Journal of Folklore Research and series editor for two book series published by Indiana University Press.

Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh! ☘️ Here is a snippet of the 13th century Acallam na Senórach 'The Colloquy of the Ancients', a narrative in which ancient warriors from Finn mac Cumaill's warrior-band, the fían, recount hundreds of stories to St Patrick. Even his guardian angels approved! #StPatrick
