Replying to @jmcelroy.bsky.social

It's worth noting that in the olden days (like, 15 years ago) areas like White Rock/South Surrey, the Tri-Cities, or Ridge Meadows had 5-15 reporters solely dedicated to local community news. There was a business model that supported that, and it's a huge issue that no longer exists.

Feeling very old because people are calling Kahlon one of the NDP’s top ministers, and I’m pretty sure I only just covered his very first election as a completely green former field hockey player? I was just at a press conference at his house in North Delta?

Thinking about writing about endangered animals for kids? Don't. It's really depressing! Half the time, it's about how perseverance will save our ecosystems! The other half it's about how we messed up really really bad and maybe there is no recovery, maybe death is all there is and ever will be.

PM Carney outlines last minute demands by the US last night. 1) Changes to the scope of tariffs on Canadian auto content 2) Restricting Canada’s ability to have trade deals with other countries 3) Restrict Canada's protections of language, culture 'and in effect, our sovereignty’

Tyler is a great journalist and I would LOVE for him to be able to do more funky features and FOI investigations and less disaster coverage. In case whoever is in charge of climate change is listening.

Fire season means a last-minute message from @tyolsen.bsky.social asking for story about a Fraser Canyon icon on the edge of a wildfire. I first interviewed the MacKinnons in 2022, after an apocalyptic year of fire, flood, and avalanches. I'd rather my next interview wasn't during another disaster.

This fire is a bit south of where the Brunswick Creek fire had been near Boston Bar, immediately south of town on the right side of the river. Very near Tuckkwiowhum Heritage Village. It's 37 C in the canyon right now.

I’m going to be at Vancouver KidsBooks today around noon signing copies of CANADA’S ENDANGERED ANIMALS. If you are around and want to pop in and say hi, please do so! I will have stickers and bookmarks.

Had my wedding reception on Sat (got married 5 years ago) and just received our photos. They are So Awful and I could not be more delighted. We had 18 disposable cameras and six kids under seven, so every other photo is of someone’s feet, a blurry shot of a table. Absolutely spectacular. No notes.

Book launch is this Sunday (June 28) at 1pm at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve in Chilliwack. Come for the book, come for the snacks, I don’t judge.

It’s here! CANADA’S ENDANGERED ANIMALS, in the flesh! The books arrived at my door late last week, which means they will be in bookstores near you either now or very soon. The book is beautiful, the illustrations by Alex MacAskill are spectacular, and I guess the writing is okay.
