This is a desperately uncomfortable post. After putting off some dental work because I couldn't afford it, I'm now in the position of needing $16K of work so that I can do basic things like eat. I don't have an extra $16k (who does??). ko-fi.com/catedenial
This article makes me think of one of my esteemed doctoral Religion advisors, who made the University of Chicago admin angry every year by submitting a proposal to construct a memorial on campus to the worldwide victims of the UChicago Economics Department. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/18/o...

As VAPs go, this is a pretty great one for 3 years at Amherst College in Law, Jurisprudence, & Social Thought for a law & humanities scholar. Amazing colleagues and I’m just down the street. 🗃️

UChicago, like any other college, gets vastly more women applicants than men. And yet, its undergrad student body is disproportionately male.

the main tradeoff of going to grad school isn't money or prestige. that would be laughable. the main reason to do it is so you can ruthlessly pick apart movies that touch on your area of subject expertise

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.
This is *the* piece. Kate Manne, professor of philosophy at Cornell, speaks truth to the totality of failures at the university — and why students protesting the war in Gaza have faced far harsher consequences than any of the Cornell 7:

Wrote about the decline and fall of SCOTUSblog, which used to be the single best resource for Supreme Court stuff, and (thanks to some intervening crimes committed by its co-founder) is now a weird platform for conservative pundits to talk about what a good job the conservative justices are doing
i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward
there are only three narratives in fiction:
1) the hero's journey
2) a stranger comes to town
3) a greedy developer is going to tear down our beloved community center...UNLESS we put on the greatest breakdance show this town's ever seen
i think you can fairly say that the second trump administration is the most racist federal administration since woodrow wilson and honestly i'm not sure that it isn't more racist than wilson's
Tough competition of course, but the Trump admin deciding that white South Africans are the only group of people on earth currently worthy of refugee status has to be the most overtly racist thing any administration has done in decades
Has anyone written about the study of medieval literature and comparative literature in the face of the 5 year PhD program? (That’s UNC’s goal is get to 5—they’ve already cut to 6.) It seems to me to be literally impossible. How would you do classes, teach, learn 2+ languages, and dissertate?

✈️ If you’re flying today, try airportwtf.com at the airport and let me know what’s missing! I’ve rolled out several updates to this l’il side project since deploying it Friday. The idea is to give flyers the info they actually want (which I find existing airport maps don’t). Feedback invited.
