schemes favouring the right sort of Russians (employed and credit worthy with kids), the Kremlin now appears willing to accept an initial downturn/chosen guns over butter, presumably in the hope of economic conditions normalising as quickly as the US can oblige.

Kremlin policy and its impact on the accessibility of big ticket consumer items provides a macro-context for this micro-analysis of Russian concerns.

Very thoughtful piece by @samagreene.bsky.social on the slightly changing mood in Russian society. People are getting more anxious. The state reacts with intruding ever more into people's all day life. Thus rather fuelling this anxiety than calming it down. tldrussia.substack.com/p/tldrussia-...

The point being current US policy on Ukraine is unpopular and actively misrepresented on an ongoing basis, surrender talks are called peace talks and Trump's consistently pro-Russian views are described as erratic.

Zelensky announced in Sep permission had been granted. Except this month we learned there was no permission. These 2 examples alone total 9 mths of coverage pretending there was a ball. They matter because they help inform the myth of Trump pivoting between Russia/Ukraine, that contrasts with

the consistent US position since Jan 2025 of no new aid, no new Russian shadow fleet sanctions and, since Dec 2025, the ongoing Witkoff/Kushner led efforts to pressure Ukraine into capitulating to Russian demands. Yet despite this, too many commentators remain committed to chasing imaginary balls.

Great example of how the current US admin vigorously, and now aggressively misrepresents its position on Ukraine. And it works.

Worth a repost given the Trump chat below. And again, no pivot or swing, rather a calculated strategy complete with baby steps forward, to ease pressure on Russia/bring it back into the mainstream

Half-Brick McCurdy@halfbrickmccurdy.bsky.social

And it's as if the sanction relief for prisoners deals the US reached with Belarus were a chance to test the waters before doing the same with Russia

This is exactly the kind of substantive economic relief the US is giving Russia, that'll get lost in the circle jerk of commentary now going on about the Trump pivot. But, it shouldn't and should be reposted far and wide.

leoskyview.bsky.social@leoskyview.bsky.social

This is entirely because of the Republicans' Iran war. The oil price spike will add 2-3tr rub to Russia's coffers this year, potentially even more in 2027. Russia is using ~1tr rub to replenish the wealth fund, and the rest to fund their war.

It is so important that European leaders acknowledge the truth as Kaja Kallas does here. Trump and the USG have been trying to force Ukraine to surrender for almost two years. There has been no recent pivot to Russia. It’s been a constant US policy www.euronews.com/2026/10/20/k...

Neat reminder how much Russia (a) doesn't want to mobilise "ordinary, decent Russians" and (b) is incapable of significantly changing its way of war

The Kyiv Independent@kyivindependent.com

⚡️️ Almost 46,000 foreigners have signed contracts with Russian army since 2022, Ukraine says. This year, the Kremlin has significantly increased its recruitment of foreigners into its army, with 16,168 individuals already identified in the first nine months of 2026, according to Ukraine.

PURL frequently gets bandied about as an example of the US helping Ukraine. It really shouldn't given it's total worth, that its billions being spent in the US and because it can be used to distract from and misrepresent the actual US position. Better than a kick in the teeth, but no much.

So there's been no Trump pivot or swing to Russia. Rather, there's been consistent misreporting of America's actual position since January 2025, fostered and indulged by the US admin, and pandered to by leaders elsewhere for obvious, pragmatic reasons.

pravda.com.uaEU's chief diplomat: US negotiators have been pushing Ukraine towards surrender for almost two yearsKaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, states that Europe's support prevented Ukraine from surrendering under US pressure.

Explaining America's Ukraine policy exclusively in terms of the Trump/Zelensky relationship is a bad thing. Its childish and unavoidably apportions at least some of the blame to Ukraine, prioritizes the latest Trump outburst over actual steps taken, and forgets Trump is dictating American policy,

The US is the world's largest producer of oil and gas, the EU not so much (see graphs below). The US has profited massively from the EU turning away from Russian gas and quadrupling it's US imports (and paying the consequent price "burden"). The EU has approved 6 sanction packages since Jan 2025,

Two days after saying he felt "betrayed" by Trump, mocking his attitude to Putin and dismissing the diesel deal... Zelenskyy is asked if Trump was making him into a scapegoat for the US President's own failings. Here is his hugely illustrative (non) response:

With repayments prioritized over govt spending, the consequent reduction in funding for health, etc, would have done sustained, demographic damage. 1/4 Folk are discussing Trump’s Ukraine minerals deal again, but leaving out what America originally sought to impose on Ukraine. They shouldn’t. The original deal would have left Ukraine - GDP of $191bn in 2024 - with a $500bn debt to repay the (massively over-valued) US aid Ukraine had already

Thankfully, confronted by the negotiating skills of America’s 6x bankrupt president, Ukraine appears to have largely neutralised the original proposal's worst bits. Even so, the minerals deal still begs the question, when was the current US administration ever on Ukraine's side? * see attached

I mind the Russian retreat from Kherson was presented by multiple American military "experts" at the time as evidence of Russian competency, particularly that of Sergey Surovikin. Except it turned out Starlink had been deliberately switched off, making it more a retreat, than a retreat under fire.

many media sweet spots - Elon Musk, Trump, drones - to ignore. Hence, pieces like this stating “The United States appears to have just effectively switched sides in Russia’s war against Ukraine”.

The United States just effectively switched sides in Russia’s war against Ukraine. In this week's Shatterbelt Brief column for Independence Avenue Media, I unpack the reasons and implications - neither of which are good (hint: follow the money). www.indavemedia.com/commentary-t...

Welp, 23 days after taking office the current US admin circulated a draft plan - a minerals deal - to cripple Ukraine’s economy for generations. Informed by the current admin’s lies about how much US aid Ukraine had received, this sought to impose a $500bn debt on Ukraine in exchange for eff’all.

Temporarily throttling Starlink made headlines, but the US lifting sanctions on Russian diesel exports and now potentially easing sanctions on Russia's shadow fleet, would be of longer term benefit to a Russia contending with record debt levels and record borrowing costs.
