There's a pretty cool exhibit at the MAH right now. The Boardwalk has dug out a handful of vintage arcade games and other historic artifacts. Bonus points for having Last Resort playable in a rare NEO-GEO "Goldie" cabinet (no CRT though 😓) #retrogaming #exhibit #vintage #arcade

Today someone asked me what framework / cms they should use for a new personal website, and thinking about it I realized I couldn't recommend any of them because I feel like they're just becoming too risky to run for that use case. I recommended a static site generator. What a time to be alive.

I just replaced my induction stove with an old-fashioned electric stove. I don't think the induction stove talked to anyone, but it was a touchscreen that only worked if I hit it in exactly the right spot. I would stand there tapping, tapping, tapping. I just want my appliances to work.

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...

Women: We live in a constant state of vigilance because men pose a constant threat to us, here are literally millions of corroborating stories. Men: What a scary time for men this is.

Light is the left hand of darkness and darkness the right hand of light. Two are one, life and death, lying together like lovers in kemmer, like hands joined together, like the end and the way.

This is a terrible time for systems thinkers, in part because nobody wants to listen to systems thinkers about stuff they’ve been saying for years, so now systems thinkers have to watch deeply incurious people reinvent systems thinking from first principles

The arc of the moral universe is long, but it accidentally bends toward justice because fascists are dumb as hell.

HaJ3FgupAm8RrDJW3MHgT9X7Ft27eVaD What is that? That's a hard-coded API token that Flock cameras use to identify themselves and get OAuth credentials, which can then be used to talk to Flock's production servers. Like, anyone on the internet can probably do this right now.

One side of this war has an elected legislature but it doesn't really have any power compared to the supreme leader and the council of guardian jurists, and the other is Iran.

I waited in line four hours to get Julien Baker tickets this weekend and it was the best ticket buying experience I've had in years.

Digital Ocean ended their $50/month sponsorship of GNOME and FlatHub and went radio silent on CSS-Tricks right around the time they found a spare three million dollars to burn on “sponsoring” a high-profile racist’s dotfiles repo. Impossible to see this as anything but a statement of their values.

Have we not eaten while another starved? Will you punish us for that? Will you reward us for the virtue of starving while others ate? No man earns punishment, no man earns reward. Free your mind of the idea of deserving, the idea of earning, and you will begin to be able to think

We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

Why do we call it an "arcade"? This question takes us back to the earliest days of coin-op amusement, the origin of recorded entertainment, and the tumultuous days of technology Trusts. Introducing: The First Arcade (maybe).

I’ve loved the Internet Archive and Wayback Machine 🥰since before you heard of it… I am here to say that PEOPLE ARE LEANING ON IT TOO DAMN HARD. It ain’t the solution. Stop making breezy claims about what they keep safe. Start figuring out what you can do to stop the erasure of our digital past.

Horror movie pitch: It's like The Exterminating Angel, except instead of a dinner party, a group of people are unable to leave a Zoom call after their meeting winds down. Bonus horror: Cameras and mics get stuck on.

For my 16th birthday my mom took me and some friends into the big city (Chicago) to see Rocky Horror at the Biograph Theatre (famous for being the place where John Dillinger was shot.) I will always associate Tim Curry with this formative event. RIP king.
