Torn between Succession, Mad Men, and Better Call Saul here, but weirdly, that felt like the only part of this that was a toss-up. I'm a little surprised at how unwavering the other nine wound up being.

I tried using AI to write my resume, the way they tell you to, but it kept sneaking in little references to my sensual lips. Claude stop it, I said. This is a programming job. It ignored me. Bedroom eyes, it wrote, under a job where I mostly used Visual Basic. Wears tight little shorts.

When I was 16 a teacher had us read Ray Kurzweil—the original apocalyptic AI cultist—and it was so obvious to us how delusional he was that we all ganged up to tell the teacher how much Kurzweil sucked, and that was how I met my first-ever girlfriend. True story!

Ok I've seen enough. The ai guys are in a millenarian apocalyptic cult. They convinced themselves they were too smart for religion and then looped right around into creating a machine god. No more to it than that.

It's very easy to wear a suit and tie in any major city, even if the aesthetic has mostly disappeared from daily life, because there are people outside wearing pink tutus with Army boots. As usual, your liberation is connected to other people's liberation.

There is no deadline for finding your people, falling in love or discovering something new about yourself. If you’re beginning again, I hope you give yourself room to be a beginner. You don’t have to explain your pace to anyone. I'll always cheer for the life that feels right to you.

Abstraction is to video games what cuts are to film: the defining trait of the medium, around which all artistry springs. It's why so many modern games are such shit.

Steve@stevetown.bsky.social

We talk about early games abstracting game worlds so you can traverse them quickly and it's fine, then modern games wanting to "flesh things out" and you end up with world bloat and slogs of games that take way too long to do anything and go anywhere. Rebirth had this problem.

I don't love Hamilton, find its emotional beats insincere and transparently manipulative, and think its rhyme schemes are obnoxious and cringe, but also Lin Manuel-Miranda is insanely good at what he does. All Lin haterdom needs to factor that in, because denying it makes you sound dumb

Micah@rincewind.run

yeah this is just facts like, there are valid complaints to make about Hamilton and how it presents things, but “Lin-Manuel isn’t talented and these songs suck” is objectively false

I wrote SO MUCH about my favorite band. They're fuckin nuts. I could go on, but I already did. 👇🏼

the same person (I think) who wrote a big Metafilter post about Moonriders in 2016 and set me down this dark path has written a much longer discography guide earlier this year world.hey.com/horses/a-bri...

Also Sam Altman has a genuinely uncanny valley face. People always said that Zuckerberg looked like a robot trying to be human, but Zuck always just seemed like a dudebro dork to me. Altman has that tinge of psychopathy mixed with an inability to fully emulate real people that puts him over the top

In a way, he's a perfect CEO for the doomsday era, in that the only people who could ever buy his act are people who earnestly believe that "humanity" is some sort of work of fiction (Also Paul Graham, who's just a sucker for anyone who tells him that his polo shirts look nice)

Replying to @bencollins.bsky.social

couple it with my new thing: "a hundo million is great to have." things don't have to be shit if the founders don't have to make a trillion dollars

social media has enormously enriched my personal and intellectual life but i think it's a plague and a blight and if you use it too much you almost inevitably go insane

Had the privilege of recording a classical piano trio I composed recently. I've been obsessed w chamber music the last few years bc of the human elements that come through that can get washed out with the scale of a full orchestra. Here's the main theme:

People who think that politics is about principle tend to be confused by men like Lindsay Graham, for whom politics is about power. For the latter, rhetoric is just another avenue for seeking power; the only real "politics" is who they think deserves power and who they think deserves none

You can't argue with people like that, because there's nothing to be debated. There are no ethics at play, because "ethics," to them, boils down to whether power is obeyed or defied. Believing they view democracy or society the same way that you do just makes you a sucker in their game.

comedy in the 2010s got really into being Clever or Artful, and there's been a real comeback of stuff that's just Goofy and Cheesy lately, and it's SUCH a breath of fresh air like Robinson et al are genuinely brilliant and weird, but they're also goofy little guys, and that's great

No matter how hard a father tries to be good, some of your memories of him are... rough. Bits that seem impossible to smooth over. And you wonder if he really even tried. MY THERAPIST: I was asking about your skincare routine ME: well do you want the answer or not

Ah what the hell 10. Across the Universe 9. You Never Give Me Your Money 8. Eleanor Rigby 7. Happiness is a Warm Gun 6. Strawberry Fields Forever 5. For No One 4. I've Just Seen a Face 3. In My Life 2. A Day in the Life 1. Something

Knew I had done this on here before. The real answer is they’re all the best but I still stand by this

9 is probably the weirdest one to find I need on here 7 says a lot about my personal taste in music imo 10 is absolutely rooted in a specific inaccessible memory You might think that 4 is unusually high, but hear me out: fuck you

Every indie game developer comes up with attempting political assassination as a publicity stunt and I keep telling them it's a bad idea. Invest in graphics, I tell them. Refine your core gameplay loop. But they never listen

Survivor announcing their MrBeast crossover episode on the same day that his huge sexual harassment lawsuit happens is the platonic ideal of a bad Survivor tie-in. Imagine Survivor editors frantically trying to scrub Jimmy's horrible ghoul face from as much footage as possible

Season 50 has legitimately been such whiplash between some of the best moments in the show's history and some of the worst. You rarely get both extremes in one season. It's pretty great ngl

I'm freaking out about this so much that I messaged my company group chat about it, just in case any of them are Herzogian cave-painting enthusiasts too. People must be told

lauren@lauren.rotatingsandwiches.com

i can't believe i'm only now finding out there's a nationwide 3d imax screening of werner herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams happening tomorrow. that's a beg, borrow or steal level of movie ticket

You are up to date.
