My final postdoc project is out today in Nature! That must hurt. The part where they talk about two different models as though it's supposed to be somehow reassuring is just an extra kick in the teeth: "We read both tea leaves AND entrails for robustness".

Great to see this published! A little paper backstory: was reading about interesting outbreaks during COVID-related shutdowns and happened across some cool work by Emmanuel Wicker et al., who first documented this outbreak and made a collection with fantastic metadata 1/9

A beautiful piece of detective work by @honour.bsky.social + colleagues revealing the origins of Ralstonia disease of bananas on Martinique. As so often, ICEs (ICERs!) prove to be extraordinary capacitors for evolutionary change. Evolution for evolution's sake 🤔 doi.org/10.1093/gbe/...

So field surveillance strategies should extend beyond focal pathogen populations to include the mobile elements circulating in a community, which can fuel rapid adaptation and disease emergence.. 8/9

Daria and I finally met Emmanuel in person last year at a Ralstonia meeting, though we still have yet to meet other collaborators on Réunion island - or see Martinique for that matter 😉 🏝️ Many thanks to all collaborators on this work - and well done Daria!! doi.org/10.1093/gbe/...

The family of ICEs in Ralstonia (yes: ICERs) have a bipartite structure, with two accessory gene clusters per ICE, and extraordinary functional specialisation in each cargo gene integration site, which is dedicated to either metabolism-related or phage defense genes. 6/9

ICE transfer can have immediate and dramatic impacts on bacterial fitness and pathogenicity, and ICE host range can be very broad, in this case likely jumping from one introduced to another endemic pathogen species.. 7/9

These lineages have completely distinct evolutionary histories: one was originally introduced from Asia to the South American mainland, while the other is derived from a population endemic to the Americas. Each was in turn separately introduced to Martinique. 4/9

The America-endemic lineage acquired a novel integrative and conjugative element (ICE).. our investigation of ICE spatial and phylogenetic distribution indicates it may have been acquired from the Asian-derived lineage! 5/9

We all established a collab by email - without ever having met or even zoomed before, almost ink on parchment-style scientific correspondence - sequenced the collection and Daria began to explore the data 2/9

This particular outbreak affected a wide range of different plant hosts in the Caribbean island of Martinique. It was not caused by the introduction of a single pathogen lineage, but by two different lineages from entirely different Ralstonia spp. 3/9

Strains from the clove-infecting lineage grow more slowly than the banana infecting ones and are only found at higher elevations. Since we were under some time pressure to get them onto plates as early as possible to inform later sampling decisions, we sampled at nightfall and processed that night.

Presenting Dr. Daria Evseeva! Daria defended her thesis at @mpi-bio-fml.bsky.social last week and earned her doctorate - with distinction! She worked on a historic outbreak of Ralstonia in Martinique, the origins of the banana outbreak in Indonesia, and the evolution of intermicrobial antagonism.

Also - check out her hat - it’s customary in Germany for lab members to decorate a hat with little mementos of the doctoral journey. The lab really nailed the goth princess pathogen vibe 😁 Daria will work on ancient outbreaks of Yersinia pestis with Maria Spyrou for her postdoc

I will be so chalant when they tell me off for snacking in the new lecture hall 😅😂
