Great to see this published! A little paper backstory: was reading about interesting outbreaks during COVID-related shutdowns and happened across some cool work by Emmanuel Wicker et al., who first documented this outbreak and made a collection with fantastic metadata 1/9

A beautiful piece of detective work by @honour.bsky.social + colleagues revealing the origins of Ralstonia disease of bananas on Martinique. As so often, ICEs (ICERs!) prove to be extraordinary capacitors for evolutionary change. Evolution for evolution's sake 🤔 doi.org/10.1093/gbe/...

Some old friends on this one which has taken a long time to come together. Congratulations to what I remember as a wonderful community of researchers on this incredible effort 🦇 🧬

“Bats are extraordinary among mammals, having uniquely evolved powered flight & laryngeal echolocation, along with disease resistance, extended healthspan & ability to hibernate. With genome assemblies of 103 bat species we provide new insights into evolutionary history & trait diversification.”🦇🧬🙌🧪

So let's get data from international travellers being used where it would have the greatest impact on disease, support building sustainable international partnerships in genomic surveillance, and deliver on the aspiration of being a Good Global Partner in the UK National Action Plan on AMR. 7/8

View full thread

This wouldn’t be a perfect system, and shouldn’t disincentivise the development of local surveillance, but it could support it, and there are many compelling reasons to set up the practice of using traveller data to help inform diarrhoeal disease management in LMIC. 5/8

View full thread

Diarrhoeal pathogens in HIC are often under routine genomic surveillance in international foodborne disease networks, but large volumes of these data (~75 000 genomes/year) are generated from people who became ill overseas. See data from GenomeTrkr below. 3/8

Genomic epidemiology analyses reveal that these pathogens are geographically structured and analysis of traveller data can reveal important information for disease management in LMIC. Check out the worked example of AMR in Shigella sonnei (and other referenced studies in the paper) for more. 4/8

We’re privileged to collaborate on genomic surveillance of diarrhoeal pathogens and AMR in both high-income countries (HIC) and LMIC, though the imbalance in genomic surveillance capacity is stark: with 540-fold more genomic surveillance in HICs (relative to disease burden) 2/8

Two post-doc positions available in our lab! It is a supportive environment and on which boosts careers! Historically, of our ~30 post-docs 27% have gone on to tenure-track positions, 27% did another post-doc, and 42% have gone on to positions in biotech or pharma.

My latest science comic just dropped! A collaboration between me, @target-amr.bsky.social @ksbakes.bsky.social and Prof. Paul Flowers. Very cool bringing the story of antimicrobial resistance to life, with an interesting detour to Victorian epidemiology and the story of Cholera hunter John Snow!
