Big ask but this book is being sent to US publishers this week & on the off chance you *had* been thinking you might read it & *did* want to take advantage of the free delivery & help push it higher up the Blackwell's chart, that'd help its chances of being piublished a lot & be much appreciated...

2000+ people in North America have bought this book on import from the UK. Many of them have told me they love it. Meanwhile, the UK publishing industry: "I'm sorry. We can't sell this book to an American audience. It is too British." FREE worldwide delivery here: blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/pro...

A reminder, because it is almost that time of year: More children are killed by cars on Halloween than any other day of the year, by far. www.vox.com/future-perfe... If you're a parent, I hope you'll do what you can to keep kids safe. If you're driving on Saturday, PLEASE exercise extra caution.

Congratulations to Toronto @mayoroliviachow.ca on her re-election tonight. Given Doug Ford’s constant interference & distractions, Toronto is arguably the hardest city in Canada to be the mayor of. I’m hopeful that in her first FULL term, Mayor Chow will lean in on more bold, creative city-building.

Toronto, don’t forget that polls don’t win elections. Turnout wins elections. Please go out today and #VOTE for @mayoroliviachow.ca.

Knowing queer people exist won't turn your kid queer. Knowing trans people exist won't turn your kid trans. But if your queer or trans kid gets to see and learn about other queer and trans people in the world, it may very well keep them alive.

"Citified" is an amazing public service, and I'm proud to be part of it. Also, if you live in Waterloo Region, I wrote about this year's WRDSB trustee candidates to help you vote for the ones who *aren't* Christian Nationalists:

BLESS @dtkmelissa.bsky.social for her amazing rundown of KW election candidates citified.substack.com/p/municipal-... - love the list of survey links, love the summaries of each candidate's record on things that matter most to me and my community, wish every municipality had a Melissa 💜

Sharing this again because some of the WRDSB trustee candidates are scarier than anything else I've seen this Halloween season:

Can't think of the last time I saw two films in a single week! Two very different documentaries... Glad to visit both the Princess Twin and the Princess Original screens. Enjoyed both films but understood more references in the one about Godspell & 1970's Canadiana 🤣

I saw that clip circulating yesterday and thought there could be a completely normal, non-sexist, explanation other than the rage bait one. Grateful for this (really well-written!) peek into a loving family, sad she felt she had to write it. themomoftheyear.substack.com/p/im-the-mom...

Every now and then I see myself referred to as an "AI Denier" and I want to be clear I acknowledge "AI" exists, it's just I think it's a massive energy drain, created from theft, implemented poorly for inappropriate tasks by loathsome tech executives who get hard at the idea of the rest of us dying

I finally sat down and wrote an email to the Talarico campaign. Doing nothing felt untenable. I encourage other decent Texans to communicate their disappointment. If this can help you get started, feel free to use anything that works for you

Lucky to have power, and to be home safe & dry after this afternoon's multiple tornado warnings and 55mm rain. Went for a quick walk in between thunderstorms, and nearby Silver Lake is at the highest level I've yet seen (photo one month ago for reference)... #onstorm

There are endless studies showing this and also the financial and societal benefits of universal basic income and or housing-first policies but the U.S. never goes for any of it because it would require allowing the poor to receive benefits that the rich consider “undeserved”

“A single-payer universal health care system could cover every American, save more than 100,000 lives a year, and still cost $1 trillion less than the system it would replace, according to a new preprint study led by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health.” ysph.yale.edu/news-article...

The is white privilege in action. There are brown and Black people who are sitting in detention for months, AFTER they already gave up on their valid claims to be here and agreed to be deported. Then they’re deported shackled on an ICE flight while this guy, who had no valid claim, goes commercial.

Darline Graham said that because her own parents died when she was a kid, people today shouldn't expect "government health care." So I dug up the real story of the death of Darline/Lindsey's parents. It makes a strong case FOR government health care. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/2148...

newrepublic.comWhat Darline Graham’s Ugly, Viral Outburst About Death Really RevealsThe senator’s parents died when she was a kid. That’s tragic. But it’s also tragic that she’s against the kind of care that could help untold numbers of people avoid that fate today.

Thank you @mark-carney.bsky.social Short, important🧵 for all Canadians to read.

Mark Carney@mark-carney.bsky.social

For over a year, Canada has worked intensively and in good faith with the United States to negotiate a new comprehensive trade deal. We have been pragmatic, patient, and persistent. Our goal has always been to get the best deal for Canadians, never a deal at any price or on any time frame.

Watching Prime Minister Carney discussing the breakdown of the Canada-US trade deal at a press conference and just really appreciating living in a country where the leader can speak coherently and knowledgeably about what is actually happening.
