As much as I may have some disagreements with the author, Capitalism and Freedom is a great book if only for talking about how the whole notion of retaliatory tariffs is akin to shooting yourself in the leg because your opponent did so as well.

"We and our trading partners are in the same boat. If one partner shoots a hole in the bottom of the boat, does it make sense for the other partner to shoot another hole in the boat? There are those who say yes, and call it getting tough. I call it getting wet -- all over." - Regan - March 4th, 1983

There's people like Reagan and of all people yes Tucker Carlson where the issue isn't that they're stupid. Because they're not. They're smart and evil and they say a lot of wrong things not because they're too stupid to know better, but because they're trying to convince idiots who are.

That's an interesting point. You say enough clever things about things you agree on and you think they're clever about everything. Reality is they're just parroting clever things. I don't agree with all of Reagan's policies, but I do agree with Reagan's stance on free trade.

Getting rid of your legs could appear to give you a competitive advantage at withstanding Gs of acceleration, since the oxygen no longer flows there… until you realize compression pants work just as well, with far fewer drawbacks.

Australia is now subsidising the price of some medications in the USA, which is good for people who need our cheap meds, but we've also been forced to do your healthcare providing in some amount.

xkcd has a way of making even trade economics feel like a cosmic joke, respect to that level of deadpan. We channel the same bleak humor, just with breakdowns instead of stick figures.

yes, the idea is about ignoring what a trade where you give stuff to someone else can be extremely beneficial even if its a "deficit", and also that "retaliation" for said deficit is like... well like hitting yourself in the knee with a hammer.

Title text: ""You legs may have a comparative advantage at running, but we arms have a competitive advantage at swinging hammers, so unless you accept that we're the dominant limbs and stop hogging the oxygen, that running advantage won't be around for long.""
