I’m still chasing the high of reading @danielpinkwater.bsky.social as a preteen.

Tristan Felix B.@tristiger.bsky.social

Daniel Pinkwater was my first author obsession that I can remember, in the sense of seeking out every book by him I could get my hands as opposed to seeking out the next book in a series I liked. I wrote SO MUCH trying to be like him in elementary school. No other author inspired me like that.

Is anyone taking any actions to secure their digital lives after this PHP stuff? Fortunately my host updated everything, so I’m set there. But are folks changing passwords, etc? I guess I should do so for any of the Japanese services that were targeted. But I don’t have shared passwords…

Are you fucking kidding me

this is fucking appalling. i already knew james dolan (who owns the knicks and madison square garden) was a douche but this is next-level. www.nytimes.com/athletic/771...

I think I will basically not be sending anything home going forward.

I'm surprised it isn't making more waves yet, but as of October 15, all packages to the US from Japan Post have to be processed through an app called Zonos to pay tariffs. This app requires the sender to submit photos of every item, and their AI then calculates the value. Zonos collects the tariff.

Based on their public comments, NYT leaders view the kind of insider details discovered by Haberman and others as essential to understanding Trump. I don't think that's correct. Public documents (Project 2025) and events (Jan 6, DOGE) to me describe this presidency better than insider accounts.

Perry Bacon@perrybaconjr.bsky.social

"Democracy dies unless Maggie Haberman has access to senior Trump aides and McConnell/Romney Republicans respect us" is essentially the argument Times editors have been making since 2018. I can't tell if they actually believe that or it's a pretext for their decision not to change their approach.

Had 黒糖 and 昆布 ice cream at MUJI Coffee in Grand Front. Apparently the Ginza location is the only other one that roasts its own beans.

Hankyu Umeda is having a British Fair on the 9th floor through tomorrow so they have a pub set up with beer and snacks. This IPA was 3.4% so I couldn’t resist. Love a good session ale.

Separately there are a couple ice cream spots, a scones store, a whisky bar, a cocktail bar, and some booth selling Buckingham Palace water for 1,000 yen a bottle. Lots of crafts too. It’s pretty nice. The Hankyu 9F pop ups are always pretty cool.

I've been immersed in research on Reconstruction in Lousiana and it's a very difficult truth to absorb that the white terrorist movement in the South was among the most successful terrorist movements in global history. Took 10 years but it won a total & complete victory through murder and atrocity.

Murakami loses again. Very funny look at Nobel history with a high comedy clip of Murakami fans being devastated on Japanese TV.

And it’s a well deserved loss, too. Murakami published the worst novel he’s ever written this year. I’m in the middle of recording a podcast with some additional thoughts but my review of the serialized stories that make up the novel is here. medium.com/@howtojapane...

5 months into this project and it only clicks TODAY that the "KY" term the team uses actually stands for 危険予知 (kiken yochi, hazard prediction) not 空気読む (reading the room). I shall hang my head in linguistic shame for the next 5 minutes.

There's a famous quote to the effect of "You write down your ideas to understand them yourself / to know what you think. You revise your writing so others understand them / that as well." Does anybody know me the source / original formulation?

For Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave, am I supposed to just fight dudes and open up the map for the first chunk of turns? I have no idea how to get into the game loop.

Ok. Quest NPCs are finally appearing on the main area. Not sure what I did to trigger that other than get through half of the turns before the first qualifier.

"Obama tried to freeze Fox out" is a complete lie and it's incredible that Jake Tapper feels the need to both-sides this

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

TAPPER: I would ask if you could convey to Trump to let CNN back in the pool. It was not okay when Obama tried to freeze Fox out. I don't think we want a world where presidents get to decide who covers them WALTZ: We need fair, objective, & well-sourced reporting. I've been victim of this nonsense

Speaking of which, 8-4 likely to be looking for contract help soon (local). Will post about it whenever I have more info.

I have so much work to do but I want to play Control…and Well Dweller…and Townfall…and Onimusha…and ahhhhh

Extremely depressing news :/ Have to wonder if this eventually affects the price of used books here, which is generally very low.

Nick Kapur@nickkapur.bsky.social

Japanese used bookstores are reporting a massive uptick in bulk purchases of used Japanese books by overseas buyers, seemingly without any regard to their contents. The only logical conclusion is that these books are being stripped, scanned, and discarded to train AI models.

Weird request here, but does anyone have a copy of this lying around? I'm writing a blog piece on the history of English swearing being used in Japanese, and I really want to find out what the heck a ファックしょうん is.

Starbucks is trash everywhere. Support neighborhoods coffee shops, cafes, and coffee roasters.

Hikosaemon@hikosaemon.bsky.social

Like 7-Eleven, I look forward to the wildly superior Japanese version of Starbucks taking over and fixing the failing US parent eventually Starbucks Corporation is planning to sell off Starbucks Japan, report says soranews24.com/2026/09/17/s...

Pretty ramshackle clothing offerings at 711. Feels like a desperate attempt to out-Famima Famima. “Whoops” feels like the appropriate brand name for this accidental smorgasbord.
