Dark Matter, season 2, episode 7, “The Pyramid”: Ryan Holder - “Oh, God, this place got really authoritarian really fսcking fast, huh?” Me:

“From a drop of water," said the writer, "a logician could infer the possibility of an Atlantic or a Niagara without having seen or heard of one or the other.” “Probably. But logic alone will never get you a Noah, an Odysseus, or an Ahab.”

“Doctor, you’re beginning to annoy me.” “In that case, I admire your fortitude! Most people in your position have threatened to kill me five or six times by this point in our relationship.”

If you're a writer, write "I waited" without saying it. “I once again combed through our text exchange, looking for some evidence that I’d misinterpreted our plans. The server eventually took pity on me and comped my drink.”

If you're a writer, write "I waited" without saying it. "A tiny woman in a pink top was called back. Had she gotten here before me? I couldn't keep track anymore. I grabbed a five-year-old copy of Southern Living and began paging through spreads of recipes I'd never have the patience to make."

On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast. The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me. But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.

The internet: Man, replacing Greg Bovino with Tom Homan is like shitting your pants and then changing your shirt. Trump: I CAN ASSURE YOU, IT’S NOTHING LIKE THAT.

News: Taylor Rehmet defeats Leigh Wambsganss in a Texas state senate race, a democratic win in a district that went for Trump by 17 points in 2024. Schumer: Well, good! News: Wambsganss spent more than 10x what Rehmet (a progressive union leader) did. Schumer: Well, fuck.

“I have just had a very productive meeting with the White House, and we have reached an historic agreement to stop hitting ourselves.” - Chuck Schumer, probably

How prevalent is the use of the term “cup of joe” (or “joe” as slang for coffee) in British English? Is its use something that would immediately mark the speaker as American, or is it a non-event?

“The fact that you can’t raise taxes on billionaires even slightly without them pouring money into fascist political movements is, of itself, evidence that billionaires as a class shouldn’t be allowed to exist in the first place.”
