Etobicoke (Doug Ford country), the wealthiest neighbourhoods, and the Jewish neighbourhoods (which I expected, as they weren't quiet about their issues with Chow) vs. everyone else. Be interesting to see if it changes. The core came out. Can Stikuts win?!

“Cyclists are often perceived as recklessly flaunting road laws. A new study challenges this perception. The study found only 5% of cyclists broke road rules while riding on bike infrastructure versus 66% of motorists who broke rules while driving.” Safe bike infrastructure fuels rule-following.

I knew this because of Mary Carillo’s amazing badminton riff.

Grossly overfunded police force sends scores of cops to help destroy bike lanes installed by lthe government (the City of Toronto) that funds them. #BikeTO

They then called in a “public order” unit and blocked off the whole street causing congestion. Apparently you need an overkill amount to intimidate people with a cane and wheelchair.

bsky.app/profile/cjpb... Our premier has no university education. Nor does our deputy Premier. They have systematically undermined education in Ontario. Another scandal. And the govt has "notified the Auditor General last week and has also referred this matter to the Ontario Provincial Police."

There’s an emerging #onpoli OSAP scandal up here in Ontario. Millennials know it rhymes with AdScam. This one might be quite bad for society to process because it straddles a sensitive cleavage, and trust in the investigatory arms have been severely battered. news.ontario.ca/en/statement...

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

Ontario Society Of Professional Engineers (OSPE) continues to speak out against the province's reckless and arbitrary scheme to rip out 19 km of protected bike lanes. Now will engineering firms heed this message before bidding on Ontario's RFP?

#TIFF Movie #5 - The Spiral - 5/10 I dunno, man. After the way Obsession blew-up last year after its screening at Midnight Madness, I don't know that they needed to schedule yet *another* Monkey's Paw type horror, albeit more of a psychological one. I had high hopes for this one nonetheless, but ...

tiff.nettiff.net

it was predictable, ultimately unsatisfying piece with more holes in the plot than you'd find in a game of Portal. The stakes kept rising in a completely predictable way only to have the denouement show us that none of it was necessary. Not a great start to my Midnight Madness experience.

#TIFF Movie #4 - The Beloved (7/10) I really enjoyed this character study about a long-estranged father (Javier Bardem) and his daughter (a compelling Victoria Luengo) by an actress who worked in a film he had directed. You could see this movie just for the first scene of their rapprochement.

tiff.nettiff.net

After casting his daughter in his new period piece, Bardem walks a tightrope between directing his actor and re-establishing his relationship with her. They each have very different memories of their past, and anyone with a difficult family situation will definitely feel seen.

In the first half you don't know if this is a buddy movie, a coming-of-age story, a gangster film, an action flick or a Bollywood movie (there's a dance scene!). And just when you've finally decided it doesn't matter, the movie shifts gears completely in the second half.

I have *so many questions*, but I'm not going to spoil the film. It gets worldwide release in a couple of weeks, and then I'll be able to try to find answers. The actors show great vulnerability - kudos to the entire crew/cast for the risks they've taken. I want all the best for this film.

#TIFF movie No. 2 - Being Heumann. (8/10) Director Siân Heder follows up her Oscar-winning movie CODA with this fantastic biopic about Judy Heumann and her diverse band of collaborators protesting to bring about accessibility legislation in America in the mid 70's.

It's easy for movies like this about inspiring figures to descend into mawkish sentimentality or hagiography, but this movie avoids that at every turn. The deaf protestors have beef with the group in wheelchairs, Judy is no angel, and the amazingly cast group of (actually) disabled protestors...

are shown in all of their shades of grey as frightened, angry, horny, high, funny and irascible. It was really refreshing to see them all presented as fully-formed humans (no pun intended) rather than caricatures. I imagine that if it qualifies you might see this on some Oscar prediction lists.

#TIFF2026 Movie No. 1 - Salvation. (6/10) Tom Nicoll's 1st feature-length film about a purposeless young man who takes a short MLM-style course on becoming a life coach and goes all-in on his new venture really speaks to the current manosphere/influencer economy.

tiff.nettiff.net

Muted but convincing performances by both Liam Harkins as the aforementioned "life-coach" and Stephen McMillan as his first client lead us on a predictable but satisfying tale with a great punchline at the end.

The "film" grain switches between grainy 16mm-type film on the exteriors and hi-def cellphone footage for Danny's online audience in vertical format hold your interest and reminds us how artificially sharp these online come-ons can be. A great start to my festival.

The stories of that day are so often of the (authentically!!) heroic efforts of first responders saving civilians, but there are so many stories of individual bravery that I'd never heard of in the intervening 25 years. Incredible stuff.

I wish the story of Frank De Martini, Pablo Ortiz, Peter Negron, Mak Hanna, and Carlos da Costa were better known. Normal office guys who just grabbed some tools and saved almost 80 people the firefighters never even reached. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_D...

Everybody’s going to make “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” jokes about this, and rightly so, but allow me to me the one guy saying “I'm on my way from bigotry to irrelevance today, Ah-hah (Ah-hah), ah-hah (Ah-hah).”

This is excellent. And it would be nice to have it liaise with a single department responsible for any work that would require the tearing up of transportation lanes. We don't need more bureaucracy, we just need it allocated in better ways. #ToPoli
