70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

theatlantic.comThe Man Who Saved the Internet YesterdayOndřej Surý was a relatively anonymous volunteer working on PHP security. Then the internet exploded.

Forests stabilize climate better than ANY tech we've invented. And protecting an existing forest stores 8-12x more carbon than planting a new one. We don't need to invent the future. We need to protect it. 🌲

Scottish Wildlife Trust@scotwildlife.bsky.social

Today, The Scottish Government announced that they have REFUSED plans to develop a golf course at Coul Links in Sutherland. This fragile landscape is home to some of our rarest and most threatened wildlife, so this a huge win for nature! 1/3

I spent this week helping translocate some animals you have probably never heard of: Vodjvodina Blind Mole-Rats. There are fewer than 1,000 left: ploughing destroys their habitat. They are not moles, not rats, but are blind! They live 20+ years and need your help! gofund.me/ce3134007. Pls share.

I love it when a tv show implements characters from minorities without making a fuss about it. Not emphasizing what makes them a minority, but just them having regular roles.

In just one episode: a bisexual woman, many women of colour, a trans woman, a person with dwarfism, a person in a wheelchair. And no one is asking questions or pointing anything out. They are just regular people! Such a breath of fresh air. This is how it should be!

Please pause your scroll for this spectacular weevil. You're looking at one of the first two iNaturalist records of Systaltocerus platyrhinus, shared just in the last month!

When you get a new phone and you need to teach it all your silly biology words (terminology, species names, etc) to make it stop autocorrecting into nonsense.

The young magpie, that learned last year that food can be found in my garden, is now back. He first tried the feeding house that had already been plundered by the pigeons. So now he's picking up one seed from the ground, flying up to a branch to eat it, rinse and repeat. Not very energy efficient.

But I do commend him for being the only magpie or crow species that has managed to find the method to get into the (quite small) feeding house. I hope I soon recover enough to build him his own bigger feeding house.

Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your resume? Botanist: I went out to look at plants in situ and when I came back suddenly 4 months had passed. I did record 800 species.

Hi, I’m a sighted alt text user! Here are some reasons I use it: - Slow Internet on an airplane - I’m over 40, I have no idea who that celebrity is - Bluesky broke images again - My vision sucks and that text is too small to read otherwise - Conveys further context and authorial intent
