The Government would enable pollution in #TheBroads. "The Norfolk plan sets [a developer's] levy at £2,675 per dwelling... Across the plan's capacity of 15,780 homes, this generates little more than £42M. "In exchange, housing construction can proceed ... "🧵 www.broads-society.org/post/broads-...

That last repost is a good excuse to share again Steven Falk's beautiful colour plate from Peter Chandler's Platypezidae monograph (The Flat-footed Flies of Europe, Fauna Entomologica Scandinavica, 2001).

Seasonal ponds here remain dry. Water beetles will be hunkered in tussocks or secreted in their pupal cells. They breathe atmospheric air, they can wait. Some aquatic snails will survive buried in mud. Long-lived adults of some caddis sit quietly in the trees, waiting to breed when water returns.

South Terrace, Cork city centre: polypody, heart's tongue and maidenhair spleenwort ferns spring from a damp old brick wall. If your eyes are open to it, we're surrounded by the relics of our lost natural rainforest heritage.

"Even if we stop emitting, Earth will remain approximately 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial temperatures."

Mr and Mrs Trellis@thenorfolkcoast.bsky.social

Past emissions will continue warming the planet for decades. New research shows that past emissions from oil, gas, coal, and cement will continue to affect the environment and increase the odds of extreme weather for decades... www.futurity.org/past-emissio...

《'Lowest possible' 1.5°C overshoot scenario limits peak warming around mid-century to 1.7-1.8°C. Emissions cuts of 18% by 2030, 45% by 2035 needed for this scenario, alongside increasing CO2 removal throughout the century.》

The chance to keep global warming below 1.5°C with no overshoot is gone. But urgent action can still limit the overshoot and bring warming back to 1.5°C by 2100. Current policies, however, put the 🌎 on course for up to 2.8°C this century. New #EmissionsGap Report: https://ow.ly/SNHX50ZZz8l

An Ice Age glacier tore huge slabs of chalk from the bedrock, carried them hundreds of metres and dumped them here at Trimingham, Norfolk. Some of these glacial rafts contain among the youngest chalk found onshore in Britain. #Norfolk #Geology #AerialPhotography

When I'm #dead, don't put my ashes in an urn. Put it into an hourglass, so I can be on time. Scatter it under a tree that's called what I am now. Grit the road with it, so I can help you one last time. #vss365

"In this landscape, energy bills are the battleground. Labour blames exposure to fossil fuels, the Conservative leadership blames Net Zero and the Lib Dems want short term relief on fuel prices. Whoever wins that argument will shape climate policy for a decade."

#MolluscMonday Giants from the south. A display cabinet in the Sedgwick Museum, Cambridge houses huge rudists from the Upper Greensand (Albian) of Shillington, Bedfordshire, an unexpected occurrence in the British Cretaceous far away from the Tethyan homeland of these bivalves.

Tracey calls it Critch but I've always called in Bullace; taxonomists call it Prunus mirabilis or P.cerasifera. The trees quietly shepherd their secret DNA identity. They fruit abundantly in my garden most years - this the best year ever. Their mother was a sucker from a hedge in Finningham.

Apple Day and Guided Walk at Thrandeston today - we had a plethora of apple & pear varieties to sample as well as rare specimen saplings to buy (for me, a Golden Russet). We are lucky to have such wonderful diversity. Among them a hard pear stored and used as winter survival food 500 years ago.

What does the health of the soil beneath our feet have to do with the price of food on our supermarket shelves? Quite a lot, actually, writes Martin Lines. After a summer of extreme drought, the case for farming that works with nature has rarely been stronger.
