I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

I usually see at least one pirate spider each year. This one, in the genus Mimetus, was climbing on the frame of our front door at night on July 15 of this year. Leavenworth, Kansas, USA. #Arachtober #bugsky #bugwatching #spiders #arachnids

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

City Nature Challenge this year, I noticed this little Bark Lynx Spider dangling from my hat. Recently on one of our #Arachtober #spider hunts, I told my girlfriend that 4 eyes are better than 2. She corrected me: we both wear glasses, so we have 8 eyes. Just like a spider! #macrophotography

Bittern demonstrating how their eyes can look right down their bill (Something they have in common with most heron species) to help them pin point prey before they grab (or stab!) it with their beak! #ukwildlife #ukbird #nature

Saw a bit about weird stuff in museums and reminded of the time I was back in the collections area at the Field Museum (as a guest) and there was a box of eyeless bird heads sitting on a shelf When I asked I was told it was a gift from some Benedictine monks, as if that explained everything

Perhaps it is hard to tell so I will clarify, the heads are the only bits in the box. There were no bodies to go with the heads. It's a box of oops all heads

There's a big lot of vintage oval Koh-I-Noor sketching pencils up on Goodwill's auction site and I have talked myself out of bidding on them but I am a little sad to see them go Also a vintage pencil catalog that honestly hurts more

Chicago Bird Collision Monitors has been trying for a decade or more to get a bird safe ordinance in place, and the city keeps dancing around it If you live in the city, let your alderperson know you support the ordinance

Since mid-January, I’ve been working almost exclusively on the largest single project of my 30 year career. “After the Age of Dinosaurs” opens August 39 at Chicago’s Field Museum, and includes almost 70 illustrations (by me) of the rise of mammals, birds, and reptiles starting 65 million years ago.
