“the machine says my daughter likes animals, I could never have known that,” Mayer says. “AI is great at doing the tedious drudge work everyone hates. like talking to my daughter, every time she opens her mouth I just wanna throw her into traffic. thanks to dazzle, I won’t have to do that.”

cool, cool

I guess I can’t be too mad that AI is devouring my industry. They made a machine that can do my job the way I can’t: fast, sterile, and sharp as kindergarten scissors. Which, let’s be honest, is more marketable than slow, sloppy, and occasionally jagged. But it’s a helluva lot less fun.

Trans people are so desperately needed in journalism, there are very few of us and most are freelancers. The Trans Journalists Association does phenomenal work supporting trans journalists while also providing resources for their cis colleagues. Please consider giving during their funding drive. 💚

We're digging our heels in. 🥾👠 TJA is raising $25,000 by Dec 1 for trans and gender-expansive journalists, because we're in this work for the long haul. And we're just getting started! Give today: bit.ly/DiggingOurHeelsIn

What It Was Like to See Nina Simone at the Village Gate, c. 1961“In the performance at the Gate, she sang not only to her live audience but also to those who would hear the recording in the future.” It’s 1961, and you’re seeing Nina Simone live at the Village Gate.

bit.lyWhat It Was Like to See Nina Simone at the Village Gate, c. 1961An announcement interrupted the hum and buzz of audience conversation: “At this time, ladies and gentlemen, the Village Gate takes the greatest pleasure in presenting the amazing Miss Nina Simone.”…

Kinda grim that despite the imminent release of the biggest media event in history, working as a freelancer in the games media going into 2027 feels like showing up to an abandoned town where "Something bad happened."

also, the lady in the oppenheim callout video uses deliberately misleading language when she says one of her clients has been executed since the doc went up originally. she doesn’t give a specific case or say exactly how a ten minute short film caused a client on death row to be executed.

even in death row states, a death sentence is often appealed, and people sit on death row for decades. claiming, even by implication, that a short film was directly responsible for an appeal’s failure and someone’s subsequent execution is a serious allegation to bring without specifics.

because, in my experience, using vague accusations or implication means you don’t have specific instances to use. nobody says “a car accident happened” when you could say “that guy hit me with his fucking car”

I love a good callout, but this lance oppenheim thing seems like a lot of nothing. at best, he probably should’ve credited them for the footage he used. and like, if knowing about how your organization works behind the scenes hurts business… that’s on you guys.

when i was writing about crime and courts, i had plenty of angry attorneys calling me up about how i made them or their client look like an asshole. it just kinda happens when someone is embarrassed that, well, they looked like an asshole.

Seems relevant to that flood of journalists who in the last few weeks announced publicly that it was okay to return to X, that the platform had gotten better, and the worst aspects of it had been minimized. This is what you have endorsed.

Ryan Mac 🙃@rmac.bsky.social

On X, users have circulated nonconsenual AI videos created by Grok of a woman they think is Jane Doe. They continue to spread her name. People have praised X for staying relevant for AI and tech conversation. But it also is the main vector for a doxing. That is X. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/16/n...

The "yuri is male gaze" debate becomes gut-bustingly hilarious once you realize that, more often than not, the genre is created by female mangaka sitting at their desks like:

But…these exapmles are all expansions in making and selling AI, not AI helping other kinds of businesses start up or expand. A big chunk of this is AI companies renting (too much) office space in just two cities. www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...
