The time to determine whether Dan J. Sullivan Jr. could appear on the Alaska ballot for U.S. Senate was months ago, and Alaska courts did so. What's additionally batshit about this is that the candidates' names are printed on the ballot in a way which makes abundantly clear who's who.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

Breaking news: The Justice Department has moved to preemptively block certification of the results of Alaska’s Senate race if Republican incumbent Sen. Dan S. Sullivan loses his tight race against Democrat Mary Peltola next month.

Even if this statement were accurate (he in fact works for the Department of Justice), the fact that your employer can fire you for not doing their bidding does not make it your job to do their bidding.

Attorney General Todd Blanche says there's a "misperception that there's this separation and independence between the Department of Justice and the White House." "I work for President Trump."

Most modern First Amendment violations would have mystified the Constitution's framers. Not this one. Federal functionaries threatening the licenses of journalists who publish news of the president's unpopularity is as core to the amendment's prohibitions as one can get.

Kevin Collier @kevincollier.bsky.social

In any other admin, this would probably be the most outrageous official statement ever made by a sitting FCC director: Strongly implying that the government forbids broadcast networks from reporting on the president's falling poll numbers. (Sorry to paste from twitter but that's where he posts.)

❗❗❗Mark Zuckerberg's meta just suspended the No Kings Instagram account. I just rushed back from my local No Kings to jump on this. Bottom line, would be helpful for all pro-No Kings folks to elevate the issue and help us get the word out about No Kings today. The Nerd Reich strikes again.

I will add that I don't assume this is intentional (or that it isn't). That's not out of trust or faith but because that kind of ham-handed Dr. Evil play isn't how these systems usually work and there are other other explanations. In any event, this is very bad.

I said this in a thread last night and in a thousand threads before it, but you really are doing the work of those who would destroy democracy and the rule of law when you are a doomer. You can be aware of — and vigorously oppose — the lawlessness of this administration without insisting on doom.

There will be a lot of equivocating about all the times search warrants have been executed on members of Congress for corruption investigations and the like, and it can't be stressed enough in how many ways HSI raiding Ilhan Omar is extremely not like that.

Josh Chafetz@joshchafetz.bsky.social

1/ The Speech or Debate Clause probably doesn't apply to the Omar search. BUT, whenever I talk about Speech or Debate immunity and argue that it should be interpreted capaciously, the pushback I always get is that we don't want to turn members of Congress into "super-citizens".

A reminder that the "presumption of regularity" (a) should not always be afforded and (b) can, in any event, be overcome.

Adam Serwer@adamserwer.bsky.social

I do not think an exec branch led by a man who thinks he is entitled to treat federal agents as an arm of his firm, refers to Somali Americans as “garbage” and has said racist things specifically about Omar is capable of neutrally applying the law to her, to put it mildly apnews.com/article/ilha...

I’ve covered death row cases for nearly a decade and witnessed several executions. What happened to Christa Pike wasn’t an anomaly. It could happen anywhere. With another execution planned for this week in Texas, let me explain why. THREAD 🧵

Cabining this to the first show being Jan. 1, 2000 rather than limiting evaluation to the portion of the series occurring in the 21st century feels odd to me (though of course the whole construct is arbitrary, I get it). The Sopranos, e.g., is clearly a 21st Century TV series in spirit.
