Profiles of young US voters show a low level of trust in government and a high level of ignorance about government function. I've seen profiles showing their attraction to chaos, clowning, mockery. Don't know the solution, but we have to show them why it matters.

With a functioning set of laws and DOJ him shrugging about threats against her kids and saying she deserves it would be evidence of prosecutable stochastic terrorism. Of course, that wouldn't apply to Trump, but that's the sign of the brokenness.

The media has really underplayed how Drumpf uses the threat of political violence/stochastic trrsm to keep his party in line. I remember reading an NYT piece on Ernst's decision to confirm Hegseth where it was just casually, IMHO, mentioned as aside that she was worried about getting attckd.

The prospect of Presidential Pardons gives Trump a way to tee-up violence by remote control. Trump's J6 Pardons told his followers that it is open season on his enemies. Presidential Immunity + Pardon Power = Dictatorship Thanks, John Roberts!

Including Green who was gleefully on the side of political violence until trump decided she needed to be a target is some bullshit bothsidesing. Also Kirk literally funded the Jan 6 terrorist attack and was killed by a right winger. There is no political violence it is ALL right wing violence.

I am glad the NYT has the resources to do this kind of deep, original reporting. (I am still reading so these are early thoughts) Editorially though, it is a wild choice to not use Melissa Hortman's name in the intro ("a legis yet include Charlie Kirk, who is *not an elected official*

Curious whether there will be mention that TPUSA helped fund the J6 riots, which feel like a pretty important condition setter in the whole "violence against elected officials" thing.

Reporting back from having read the whole thing, I do understand why they tried to keep this as even-keeled as possible, placing no blame on anyone besides including a couple direct quotes from Trump. But dang, it feels ahistorical & obtuse to draw zero insights or connections

This Administration and the Evangelicals supporting them are at war with you. All of you. They will destroy secularism and claim your lives in service to their false religious faith. THAT is where the violence begins, and ends. With those chtisto-fascists...

The threats against Republicans are most often from Republicans who are pissed the person did not kiss Trump's ring or were not far enough right.

The NYT both sides political violence. From Kirk, who didn’t hold elected office and sponsored a field trip to overthrow our government. To Van Orden who is whining people are pissed he’s an un-American piece of shit and sitting member of Congress. Trump is the one who lit this match.

what a joke no society in history has ever been failed by an institution more completely than the american people have been failed by the sycophantic stenography drones of our collaborationist court media none of this insanity would be happening without their complicity

Gee whiz, mister. If only it weren't perfectly legal to storm the Capitol with explicitly-ordered aims of killing congressmen to overturn the election results on January 6th, 2021. Too bad was entirely appropriate and okay to do. Ah well.

Yeah, the NYT "both sides"ing political violence is definitely a threat to a functioning democracy. Well spotted.

Here is the ambient tone set by texts sent from "txt.gop2026": "You're making a huge mistake continuing to ignore us like this. We're asking one last time. Verify your voter profile ASAP> . . ."

"you deserve it" - trump knows what he's doing. if anyone ever thought calling his attacks on people "stochastic terrorism" were hyperbole - it's exactly what he's doing, on purpose.

Sure, if the standard is "enforcing criminal law is violent," every government is violent, regardless of whether you think marijuana should be illegal. But have you seen how violent societies that don't have criminal law are?

We don't have a functioning democracy to threaten. Bunch of people who've spent the last 3 years committing genocide upset their actions have real consequences

The true victims when US politicians murder children overseas, attack other countries, suck up to a genocidal cunt, sign thank you letter to masked murdering cunt mob, is, really, the politicians 😂 I'd like to know if they're getting murdered at a higher rate than other jobs

Ya know, I see a lot of instances presently and historically of people using violence to intimidate officials and the populace to enact an extremist ideological project. I just used 140 characters to write that all out. It would be great if we had a word for the NYT to use for that!

NYTimes framing, at least via the headline, of this a a societal shift rather than the effects of a fascist party’s intentional tactics is complicity.

Meanwhile the rest of us public servants get threats all the time for a decade now; if it’s really Super Serious we might be lucky enough for a policeman to sit around the corner.

Political violence is a serious issue. But it’s not a “both sides” issue. The leaders of the Democratic Party do not call for violence, do not elevate violent supporters, do not pardon violent thugs who attack our seat of government and our elections. America is under threat from the right.

what's up with the AI portraits? gross. a more major point in your attempt to make this seem like something new, and both sides, you don't even mention the fact that actual violence is predominantly on the right. this feeds right wing misinformation that it's a left phenomena.

I don't see any AI portraits. However you feel about the NYT's reporting, their photography is always excellent.

look at the way Walz' suit looks against the backdrop of the curtain. go to the Van orden portrait in the article with the exact same face angle, the exact same lighting. this is absolutely obvious AI. we're doomed if we can't at least see this.

it's obvious even in cameos. the exact same lighting angle on the face (and the same complexion) despite one person being behind an empty wall with no decoration. another person in front of curtains slightly open directly behind them, and another person with the windows entirely open. the hands.

this is what leads people to believe that right wing violence is in fact justified. that white people are in their fantasies, under attack. that a person like Van Orden can be put up as somehow the victim of violent environment that he as a participant in January 6th created is breathtaking.

VanOrdan: "I was part of the violent mob that attacked the capital, then got elected and now I'm getting threats, it's so unfair"

Thanks for the link. I was annoyed (as usual) by the NYT’s both-sides-ism refusing to state the clear link between the TrumpMAGA far right and the huge increase in threats. Most of these politicians, both GOP & Dem, were threatened by people who didn’t like their anti-TrumpMAGA votes.

Lincoln was shot Kennedy was shot Ford was almost shot Reagan was shot In a country with a HISTORY of political violence they can either do something about gun control mental health bigotry, sexism and bullshit in politics or they can shut the entire fuck up. I'll care when they care.

the nyt bent over backward to make this a both sides thing but reading the whole thing you can’t escape the common fact—this is purely a right wing phenomenon. starting w the anecdote of the jan 6er congressman is truly ironic.
