Fortunately no one died in the major flooding events that devastated parts of New Mexico and elsewhere in the 4-Corners region of the US this weekend, but those floods are a good example of the point Taran Deol is making in this essay. @docsforclimate.bsky.social @gchalliance.bsky.social

climatecoloredgoggles.comBallot advice: Vote ‘no’ on Prop 45And don’t forget to vote by November 3.
Patrick Siegman@siegman.biz

I advocated for the recently-passed laws that exempt environmentally-beneficial projects from CEQA, from bicycle, pedestrian & transit improvements, to new housing within existing cities. But I'm voting NO on Prop 45, because it will make it far easier to build things that harm our communities.

I'm so pleased to see that more people will soon be able to buy community solar power from Neighborhood Sun. They've powered my home with electricity from solar for many years now--at a price lower than the dirty energy alternative offered by my utility company. Go solar! It's cheap and clean.

Never forget: Every 1/10th degree of global warming we prevent is a profound gift to our children and grandchildren in the forms of health, peace, & prosperity. Today, I’m working with colleagues from across the global to help build a path to what we are calling Zero Carbon Prosperity. More soon.

Lula’s win is the first good news for the planet in a while! I bet it shaves a tenth of a degree off how hot our earth eventually gets, which will save millions of lives Thank you Brazil!

Andreas Almgren has had a spectacular year on the track and is now turning his attention to marathon running, starting in New York City. When he isn’t training his body, he’s training his mind: “Applied non-linear optimisation, quite hard math,” he said. 👍👍

What are plastics made of? Plastic is made primarily from fossil fuels—specifically crude oil and natural gas. It should not surprise anyone that plastics are harmful to human health. @psnap.bsky.social @docsforclimate.bsky.social @gchalliance.bsky.social @psr.org

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

For decades, scientists believed that plastics were some of the safest materials around. Now, a new study shows just how flawed that assumption was. A range of studies have found links between microplastic exposure and various health problems.

Non-Jews telling Jews that they are doing their Jewish identities inauthentically if they have the "wrong" politics is in fact textbook antisemitism. But somehow I'm not holding my breath for the ADL to weigh in on this one, because it would require them to acknowledge many Jews support El-Sayed.

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

Trump on El-Sayed: "Any Jewish person that supports this guy should be ashamed of themselves. I'll tell you right now, you should never speak to them again. I'm polling at 99% in Israel. I cannot understand how anybody who's Jewish can even think about voting for this guy."

My main fitness motivation—to challenge myself—hasn’t changed over the past five decades, but the sheer joy of being in motion is what brings me back to it every day. It’s a bit like the mafia in that regard. It keeps pulling me back in.

It would be great to make America healthy again. We know so much about how to do that—starting with making air and water pollution a thing of the past. Now we just need to elect candidates who are willing to put people’s health—not corporate donors profits—first. @environmentalvoter.bsky.social

A slice of history worth noting. But here’s the deal: For people to notice, consider, assess, and eventually take action, warnings about slow moving man-made disasters must be repeated over and over again—which wasn’t the case in the health community. Meanwhile, Big Oil was deceiving repeatedly.

Trump’s America: A pay to play kleptocracy where polluters can be princes.

John Schwartz@jswatz.bsky.social

AdvaMed boasted earlier this year in a letter to members that its lobbying efforts, which included political contributions to Mr. Trump’s causes, had paid off, saving the industry millions of dollars in upgrades. “Membership has its privileges,” the group wrote. Incredible reporting from the NYT

Did he send Navy Seals in to dismantle these nefarious organizations that were “infiltrating” the impressionable minds of our students? Honestly, this reminds me of a Frank Zappa parody song from my youth: The World of Secret Underwear (“perverting the minds that make our laws”)

Overall, we are seeing some very odd deal talks that are supposedly a part of ending the war in Ukraine. But in fact evidence shows these deals are structured (in the most recent case secretly until now) to financially benefit Russia or business partners of the Trump and Witkoff families.

What most people don't know: when you fill up a petrol car most of the energy never moves it. Petrol car: 13–21% of the crude oil's energy reaches wheels. Electric car on today's UK grid: 43–45%. Electric car on wind+solar: 77–80%. That's why we don't need to replace fossil energy one for one.

I blame People magazine. (Does it still exist?)
