Evolving towards a more tolerant society would be better for all of us. We should expect all humans to be... human, to make errors, to be complicated, to have flaws. As long as we are talking about ordinary people living ordinary lives, we should leave each other alone a lot more often. 1/3

Good essay here from @juliaazari.bsky.social. Since Julia is in part asking for other social scientists to weigh in here, I thought I'd add some thoughts that have been germinating in my head for while. The main point is that the base of evidence that anti-trans ads 'work' is paper thin. (1/2)

I am alarmed by how many people seem to treat the election result as a foregone conclusion. Vote and take friends with you.

G Elliott Morris@gelliottmorris.com

Dem Senate candidates have lost a little less than 0.5 pts of vote margin over last 2 weeks, while the generic ballot has trended up for them by about 1 point. Overall state of the race is unchanged: Dems have leads well below size of normal poll error fiftyplusone.news/forecast/sen...

The problem people have is that all the interesting cases are close. No one says “ah ha, polling fails!” when something expected to win with 74% gets 71%.

This thread comes to a close... ... as we now have a final result. Let the records show that, with 92% of the vote countywide, Lula is up 3.3%. (Can he end up doubling his 2022 margin?)

Taniel@taniel.bsky.social

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

We have near final results from Brazil, 99.8% reporting: Lula 51.76% Bolsonaro 48.24% In 2022, Lula beat Bolsonaro's father by 1.8%; so he has nearly doubled his lead. Also, if you followed this thread & enjoyed it... be sure to follow me: I'll be tracking 700 US elections at once in 9 days!

As turnout in Texas nears 3 million votes, Hispanic turnout is now exceeding presidential levels. More Hispanics have voted than did at this point in the 2024 presidential election. What's driving this huge increase? Young voters.

If I were one of these staffers, I would not believe that these pardons were definitely going to hold up. As Trump himself has demonstrated: rules are only rules when someone defends them. Nothing stops a future (packed?) court from declaring the pardons invalid.

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

The ability of the Trump administration to keep breaking the law depends on telling staffers that they will be pardoned www.washingtonsun.com/whitehouse/w...

It’s not hard to imagine a future Supreme Court inventing a rule that a presidential pardon cannot apply to crimes in which the president himself is implicated. All the court has to do is say so.

This is ridiculous.

Nothing says “aspiring authoritarian” quite like the regime posting a sign inside Independence Hall enlisting the public to report any deviations from an official propaganda version of history.

California used to have competitive elections. In 1994, Republican Governor Pete Wilson championed Prop 187, which among other things, attempted to bar children of undocumented migrants from attending public school. Latino voter registration surged in response, and the state become uncompetitive.

Two initial takeaways from updated TargetEarly early vote data: - Overall vote is now running meaningful ahead of 2022 - Young people, Blacks, and Hispanics are turning out in much larger numbers than at this point in 2022 Dems may be getting the turnout and electorate we wanted this year.....

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.

Meaningful graphics in NY Times today: 1. Trump was never popular with young people, just momentarily more popular than his own unpopularity. 2. Trump is historically unpopular. The results for Truman might be discounted by modern polling standards. Bush was in a disastrous war.
