I finished Gears of War: E-Day, and it was great! All of the popcorn chompin’ action of the past games, it with a sprinkling of open world exploration. And it was long! Good stuff.

Let’s guillotine the internet

Now that Freeplay’s statement is out, I’ma say my peace. Note: I (sadly!) am no longer a board member and have no insider knowledge of details. My understanding of the situation is one or more speakers raised concerns at the last minute about a donor/sponsor, leaving precious little time to act.

I served on the Freeplay board for almost a decade. They are good people, VOLUNTEERS, and deeply dedicated to Freeplay’s mission of elevating emerging and marginalised voices in the games scene. Everyone involved in this situation are good people, in an impossible situation.

Could it have been handled better? Sure. Are any of them racists, zionists, or antisemites? NO. I refuse to accept that, and I am deeply disappointed in many of the takes I have seen over the last two weeks. Do better, APAC games scene. I know you can. You don’t get a cookie for having takes.

The board would have been faced with the impossible decision of: 1/ Cancelling Parallels 2/ Accepting that more than one speaker would pull out 3/ Refunding the donor and removing attribution They chose option 3. It sounds like communication wasn’t handled well, that sucks.

PlayNow is such a vital event for Australian game makers, pre-selected face-time with publisher scouts? Astonishing. Huge props to the Vicscreen team for their efforts, and to the Vic government for keeping it open to developers from all corners of the country. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

Why do we keep on doing this? Praising a 'small core team' for a game with 1100+ people in the credits is incredibly misleading. This PR narrative hurts, hides the massive shadow workforce of outsourced developers and testers, and sets impossible standards for actual indie teams.

GamesIndustry.biz@gibiz.bsky.social

Star Wars: Galactic Racer was made by a core team of 75 people. "What we wanted to do was keep that core small, smaller than perhaps you might have done in the past, and scale capacity and capability with what we call distributed development." https://bit.ly/4hT02qg

“I don’t think unionization would meaningfully affect our business.” Yeah, this is why. Straight-up mafia-ass union busting. Your workers are the lifeblood of your business and you treat them like enemies within.

I've had the privilege to have a bit of an inside peek into the studio and development of Beyond These Stars, I'm very excited for this release!

Like one time I was at valve and they told me about a chandelier Gabe had made that was just literally a collection of his swords hanging from cables above the main stairwell, chandelier of Damocles. something that if it fell on you you'd not just be killed, but slain. they made him take it down

It's wild seeing the major games retail stores clamouring for people to pre-order GTA VI to "secure your copy" when there is literally no disc in the box. It's just a code, and they're selling it for the same price as the platform stores. If you've purchased from a physical store, why?

My dear friend @hey.paris was celebrated at the Australian Game Development Awards this year, and has written a stunningly beautiful piece to commemorate the moment. Goodbye Argos, you will be missed and never forgotten. Congratulations Paris, your career has helped so many find a home in games.

Last week, I received one of the most prestigious awards in my field. There were about a million people I wanted to thank, and I would have loved to tell you all about the Tassie game dev scene that I've seen grow over the last 20 years. But my mind was elsewhere 💔 yarnspinner.dev/blog/adam-la...

every single team I have talked to that actually measures their velocity/productivity has come to this same conclusion. Every team that has never measured productivity and just asks their devs if they think they are going faster disagrees with this. CEOs love teams that never verify shit I guess.

Harvard just dropped a study AI productivity in software engineering and it found the average increase in productivity from using Claude code is.....zero and for exactly the reasons you'd think fion.ac/jellyfish.pdf

Watching Mayday on Apple TV, a Ryan Reynolds vehicle set during the Cold War, he is a recon pilot shot down in a Blackbird over Russia. He and Kenneth Branagh’s ex-KGB character attempt to exfil under myriad comedic circumstances. Getting such a Wes Anderson vibe from a lot of the cinematography!

Considering pitching a talk: "It's all micky mouse clown shoes: No-one knows what they're doing, everyone is making it up as they go." A talk about how the games industry abhors seniority, rejects institutional knowledge, and wilfully disregards the needs of the people capable of doing the work.

*automation used to be: symbolic decision making (ie old-school AI). People these days just bolt on an LLM to do their testing, but LLMs are not deterministic so you have to check their work. Symbolic is repeatable. 99% of what people are automating with LLMs can be done with a script for pennies.

This is good summary of why AI is bad at QA: paulbrodner.dev/2026/can-ai-... I am a HUGE fan of automated* testing, but we always used to joke that automation can do Quantity Assurance, but for Quality Assurance you need humans. LLMs do not change that, they make it more important if anything.

paulbrodner.devCan AI Test Thoroughly? Why the Industry Is Sleepwalking Into a QA CrisisAI can generate a thousand tests in minutes — and that's exactly why teams are starting to mistake coverage for quality.

Looking up some tax-related information and just stumbled across one of my freelance journalism contracts, it was a full-time contract for six months with one of the major mastheads. $197 per day. Good grief, what a nightmare of a sector.

Here’s the rub: We cater to many readers, but as an indie, non-commercial publication, it’s that small portion of paid subscribers that keeps us afloat and allows us to pursue the kind of stories that earned these accolades. Please consider backing us if you believe in a better games media!

How did we get to the point that big stupid collector's editions don't come with a copy of the fkn game? How did that happen?

Jamie Ghoulea@jamiegalea.bsky.social

Look I don't wanna yuck anyones yums but that is 700 goddamned dollars for a bunch of merch and you don't even get a copy of the game with it. AND IT PRESOLD OUT? Goddamn.

Nowadays I would say: National Film and Sound Archive would love that stuff! (for aussie made games at least) I am generally presuming that there are similar archival projects in other countries that would be into this stuff (even the cheap plastic crap, maybe especially the cheap plastic crap!)

Just filed a complaint with our state's consumer protection group due to Appliances Online's local service provider refusing to honour a warranty. What a frustrating waste of time, not to mention the fine they're about to received, over a genuinely braindead failure of bureaucracy.

When I was a journalist, you would get inundated with promotional stuff. Sometimes it was amazing, most of the time it was cheap plastic garbage that is awkwardly sized and takes up huge amounts of space. You’re allowed to get rid of unsolicited things you don’t want.

Only 100 functioning Silent Hill: Townfall CRTVs were made, sent out to different influencers before the games release, and someone's already selling theirs for over $300 😬 It's a cute toy, but savage to be like "I do not need it".
