This weekend, I was at a bar that had trivia cards at the tables. The questions were poorly written, though. Card: Who was Julius Caesar? Me: He was a friend. A Roman. A Countryman. A guy who had two pizzas instead of just one. I don't know what they're looking for.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

We’re having our bathroom remodeled, so we’re staying at my Mother-in-Law’s place. It’s fine (we get along ), but it has thrown off my horror movie watching schedule. Also, I don’t have access to my record player, so Jay’s Not Spinning anything right now.

15) Blacula (1972) 7/10 I can’t believe it took me this long to watch this! I expected lots of awwwkward stereotypes because of when it came out, but this was surprisingly progressive. Even the two gay characters are treated well (for the time) even if they are first to die. I’ll watch the sequel.

13) The Addiction (1995) 3/10 I saw this when it first came out, and I hated it. I figured maybe now that I’m almost 50, I’d like it more. Nope. I think I might hate Abel Ferrara films. Super-pretentious, with obvious observations made as if they are genius. Skip it.

14) Vampires of the Velvet Lounge (2026) (2/10) No. Seriously, this movie is terrible. Rosa Salazar appearing almost exclusively in her underwear couldn't save it. Terribly written, terribly acted, terribly directed, terribly edited. I KNOW most of the actors could do (and have done) better.

Repeat after me: I am not funnier than Aaron Rodericks. I am not funnier than John Darnielle. I am not funnier than Chris-Chan. I am not funnier than Big Dave. But if I stand back and watch and learn, I will be funnier than I am.

9) Cat People (1982) 6.5/10 I remember seeing part of this on The Movie Channel when I was 6. In that memory, a guy pulls a hunk of skin off himself and eats it. Well, I remembered correctly, and that man was Malcolm McDowell. Anyway, decent, but not scary, movie. Very 80s.

A remake of "The Monster at the End of This Book," but the last page is a mirror. Grover implores you to face the monster and realize that, in our own way, we are all monsters. Then, he tells you not to turn away from the monster, but to embrace it. By accepting monsterhood, you become more human.

5)The Carpenter's Son 7/10 I suspect this one will grow on me. Great idea (Jesus' teenage years were horrific) that feels biblical-apocryphally acurate while still being like a horror movie. The only movie with Nic Cage where I wished it was someone else (because he never goes full Cage)
