"China will have abundant amounts of renewable energy for data centers, with fossil fuels as a backup. Meanwhile, the US marches boldly backward toward the past," writes H. Holden Thorp on Science's 2025 Breakthrough of the Year highlighting the rise of renewable energy. https://scim.ag/459EZKv
Simply amoral to not protect our children. 14 kids have died by suicide from AI so far.
President Donald Trump signed a highly anticipated executive order on Thursday that sets in motion a plan to establish a national regulatory framework for artificial intelligence while undercutting states’ abilities to enact their own rules.

Study; USAID programs have saved over 90 million livesover the past 2 decades. Researchers estimate that if current cuts continue through 2030, 14 million people who might have otherwise lived are likely to die. www.npr.org/sections/goa...

This @propublica.org piece from April, about Trump's attack on all the measurements that matter, feels particularly relevant today.

Huh. Something to counter China's rise in technology, scientific research and education?? While we gut USAID, Voice of America, State Dept., NIH & NSF scientific research, and withholding higher education opportunities by restricting visas for international students and professors.

This captures why so many people believe govt is broken. And think why bother voting?
I’ve been thinking a lot about Murkowski’s vote. It contains, in one action, so much that defines our pathetic political moment: Selfishness: I’m taking care of me and mine, the rest of you can pound sand; Lack of accountability: I know the bill is bad, hopefully someone else will fix it;
Different rules for Rs every time. Started with Moscow Mitch when Garland nomination. Until that changes Dems will always be caught flat footted.
Such a good point on SCOTUS hypocrisy when it comes to Trump vs Biden: They let a nationwide injunction kill Biden’s student loan relief when they had a chance to rule on it. 5 months into Trump’s presidency, suddenly nationwide injunctions are a grave threat to executive power and they must rule.

No surprise if you're paying attention.
#NoKings coverage was better by smaller outlets while editors of influential news outlets like NYTimes / WSJ / WaPo continue downplay & dampen coverage of the pro-democracy movement and demonstrations like #NoKings. See our analysis: mediaanddemocracyproject.substack.com/p/no-kings-c... 1/n
@aoc.bsky.social ask the Health Secy about this during the hearing!
RFK Jr. just announced some of the replacements for the CDC vaccine advisory panel. It’s really, really bad. I see at least two notorious anti-vaxxers who became semi-famous during covid. x.com/seckennedy/s...

"understanding what the Trump administration is up to...should return to books like Harvard Hates America and then read Project 2025...the government will sacrifice liberal arts colleges and universities to the benefit of trade schools, faith-based institutions and military academies."
Trump’s war on Harvard was decades in the making. This letter proves it | Bernard Harcourt
Oh what a surprise, people without any understanding of government workings or supervision by inspector generals made mistakes.
“I think that mistakes were made,” said Sahil Lavingia, who worked at DOGE for nearly two months, about the AI tool he developed. “I’m sure mistakes were made. Mistakes are always made.” By @bxroberts.org and @vernalcoleman.bsky.social

Touch screens, digital recordings, and speech recognition are all products we use every day that were developed thanks to govt research $$ given through the National Science Foundation. #SaveNSF
We may never know the lives we would have saved or the innovations we would have made if cuts to science research go through.

Why pay hospital bills when you can spend it on a parade, gild your office, and fly to Florida every weekend?
Multiple hospitals in at least 10 states have begun to have to lay off hospital staff & "pause payments to medical suppliers" because these states haven't received Medcaid funding since January. There's money for a military parade, but the gov can't provide Medicaid funding? #MomSky
