This much for academia being somehow above or outside the war: this is the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, and these are our colleagues, engaged in the same work we do. This is also late punishment for the instrumental role the Academy played in the late 1980s in the struggle for independence.

🚨 UPD: A woman was killed and at least three others were injured after Russian forces struck the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in central Kyiv.

Precious because for the first time in my life I am not sure, if I see out my days in a democracy and meaningful because, keeping an eye on the Russian election, I know how meaningless voting can be.

I hope Witkoff and Kushner see the sheer beauty of Kyiv, its delicacy and softness and layers of history. It might give it a face when they read about the next missile attack. But they are property developers, so I should not hope too strongly.

Talks begin. Unlikely much will come of it but Ukraine must maintain the aura of the reasonable party which is difficult when the counterparts are not neutral but actively working for the other side.

I remember standing in those late-Soviet lines as a kid. The Public Aesthetics of the line are terrible. And the Gas Line is the opposite of Kuran's preference falsification: a public assembly of everyone privately doubting the government’s capacity to provide basic necessities.

Pretty good analysis of British academia’s malaise which made me leave (plus Brexit). The unnecessary destruction of a system that functioned well through the cult of management. My condolences to my colleagues in Exeter. open.substack.com/pub/johnheat...

open.substack.comThe Crisis in Britain’s UniversitiesThe cuts that have been proposed at the University of Exeter demonstrate the crisis of purpose in Britain’s universities. Should not universities also be places to prepare for "eternal dwellings"?

One of the casualties of the US -Israeli attack on Iran is the memory of the tens of thousands of protesters killed by the Iranian regime just a few weeks before. Trump has allowed brutal bullies to be recast as victims, probably pushing the chance of political change in Iran back by decades.

It is not surprising Russia targeted the Chornobyl Museum in Kyiv. I spent hours in their exhibition a few years ago and left with an overwhelming sense of doom caused by systemic failure, yet mitigated by the actions of conscientious individuals. Chornobyl is the anti-story to imperial grandeur.

Die Ukraine hat einen der massivsten russischen Luftangriffe durchlebt. Hunderte Drohnen, Dutzende Raketen, Tote, Verletzte, heftige Zerstörung. Druckwellen haben auch das ARD-Studio Kyjiw erreicht. Unser Team ist zum Glück unverletzt. Die Statik des Gebäudes muss geprüft werden.

Yes. And the reverse is also true.

I am in awe of this very British linguistic construction: a subjective qualifier preceding a verb embodying uncertainty. An amazing feat of hedging your words.

Trump: Windsor Castle, a structure that's so long it never seemed to end. It was built by a gentleman named William the Conqueror. I asked the king, I said, 'was he a nice man, William the Conqueror?' He said, 'I tend to doubt it.'

Incompatible with local interests. Chornobyl was also instrumental in creating an independent local press, whose founding ethos was the revelation of hidden truths. Ultimately, the many truths that were raining down on the Soviet people in the following years were too much for the system.

The Soviet Union collapsed under an emotional overload of pain and disillusionment, but also hope for something better. The catastrophe of Chornobyl was a major catalyst in setting this process in motion.

This sense was particularly acute in Kyiv, which was ordered to hold its annual May Day parade despite huge radiation levels. Ukraine had been designated as the Soviet nuclear provider and to have even more nuclear power stations to be built. A sense of betrayal and colonial exploitation

Became common currency even among people who so far had never thought of Ukrainianness as separate from Sovietness. Now and in the following years when the true costs of the disaster became visible - child mortality, untreatable illnesses, deserted landscapes - Sovietness seemed increasingly

The accident itself confirmed people’s suspicion that the Soviet Union was not, or never had been, the shining beacon of technological progress, which it seemed to be in the times of Gagarin. The dilapidation and disorder of public institution was evident to all, but now it was shattered.

The callousness of officials far away in Moscow, who valued silence over swift evacuation and calls for international help strengthened the sense of Soviet citizens that they did not matter in the system. That indeed they were no citizens but expandable subjects. Rumours replaced information.

The official silence that followed reminded people of all the silences that had come before and had covered up crimes and brutalities: the violence of collectivisation, the purges, the postwar deportations, repressions of demonstrations and dissent. Every Soviet family knew this silence.

I have walked this street many times. As have millions of Russian tourists. But the times when shock still had value have probably passed a long time ago. Oh beautiful Lviv. My heart breaks for you.

We truly live in an age that proves that destruction is much easier than construction, that creating negativity is much easier than positive affirmation, and that no man is too stupid or too evil to wreck things for all. And I have several candidates in mind here.

The massacre of Iranian protesters reminds of Tiananmen Square - an event that is still shrouded in the darkness of deadly secrecy. The Chinese regime bought itself out of the memory of mass murder by making China rich and imposing silence. Hard to see what Khameini can offer in order to forget.
