New paper by the World’s most prominent climate scientists shows rapid acceleration of human-caused warming, with a warming rate now that tracks to near 2.4°C by 2050, far faster than was expected, if it continues…

The rise in Niño 3.4 region sea surface temperatures over the past few weeks has been nothing short of astonishing. We are now hotter than any days during the 1997/1998 super El Niño event, and we are still many months from the peak.

The Niño 3.4 region of the tropical Pacific has been hovering above 2C for the past week. This is the threshold for a very strong ("super") El Niño event, and it was reached more than a month before the prior record set during 1997/1998:

The world has warmed by around 1.4C since 1850. It took 148 years for the first half of that warming to occur, and just 27 years for the second half!

The three year running average for the global surface temperature anomaly is now more than 1.54°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial baseline. With El Nino ahead, expect this to keep rising over the next two years.

Use of Sun and Stick for direction. ✍️ 1. Place a stick upright in the ground. 2. Mark the tip of the shadow cast by the Sun. 3. Wait 15-30 minutes, then mark the new shadow tip. 4. Draw a line between the two points — this line runs East-West. 5. The first mark is West; the second mark is East.

Here's your Sunday-morning El-Nino forecast, holding steady at 2.5°C, using the "relative oceanic nino index," or RONI. The previous high RONI was 2.5°C in the 1982/83 El Nino, so this El Nino is shaping up to be at least tied with the strongest on record since 1950.

🌡️ Europe is the fastest‑warming continent, warming at more than 2× the global average. Changing weather patterns, reduced air pollution, declining snow cover & proximity to the rapidly warming Arctic all play a role. ⬇️
